When looking for hotels in Playa Coronado, the specific destination comes first. You can also consider Coclé as a broader regional context, where topics range from the highlands and protected nature to hiking trails and museums.

The Broader Setting of the Riviera PacĂfica

A broader regional term is the Riviera Pacífica. It stretches from Chame in the province of Panamá Oeste along the Pan-American Highway to Farallón in the province of Coclé. This area therefore spans two provinces and several places.

Highlands and Views in Coclé

The northern region of Coclé includes extensive highland areas, national parks, and cloud-covered mountain peaks. One notable landscape feature is the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument, which rises to more than 1,185 meters above sea level. On clear days, both the Pacific and the Caribbean are visible from there. The view of both oceans is therefore explicitly dependent on clear weather and cannot be expected at all times.

The educational trail at the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument also has a specific focus: a report on its development from September 2025 names recreation, environmental education, and safe, responsible access to regional biodiversity as its goals. This combines experiencing nature with learning and gives the trail a different emphasis from a hike focused solely on the route.

Protected Area and Hiking Trails

The Parque Nacional General de DivisiĂłn Omar Torrijos Herrera protects 25,275 hectares of primary forest and is part of the National System of Protected Areas under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment. The park has a network of hiking trails, including Los Helechos, Sendero Marta, Las Ranas, and Cuerpo de Paz. The area figure describes the size of the protected area; the names identify specific trails within the hiking network.

To get there from Panama City, a road branches off the Inter-American Highway at the entrance to the community of La Candelaria and heads toward El Copé. The route is approximately 30 kilometers long. A dirt road then leads north to the community of Barrigón; from there, a trail of about four kilometers climbs to Cerro Calvario in the park. These sections differ in surface and route. As road conditions can change, check them before visiting.

Another Hiking Option

In the broader destination of Coclé, El Valle de Antón is home to the 30-kilometer Ruta de La Caldera de El Valle de Antón. A 2022 project progress report describes hikes with or without a guide, as well as directional signs at trail junctions. As the state of the infrastructure may change, it is worth checking the signage before making specific plans. The route thus offers another named hiking option within Coclé, without being equated with the trails in the national park.

Crafts and Archaeology

The Museo del Sombrero Pintao in the district of La Pintada showcases the lives and techniques of artisans, as well as hats from different periods. The exhibits thus combine craft practices with a look at hats from various eras.

The Museo del Parque Arqueológico El Caño has a different focus. Its permanent documentary exhibition presents original artifacts and replicas from finds in the tombs of El Caño to the public. This creates a clear distinction for cultural exploration in Coclé: one museum focuses on crafts and hats from different periods, while the other focuses on archaeological finds and their originals and replicas.
