Carnival traditions, the pollera and historic sites give Las Tablas a distinctive cultural identity. Visitors planning a trip here can use the annual festival dates as a guide while also discovering the town’s craftsmanship, music and history. Specific festival schedules may vary from year to year.

Carnival tradition in Las Tablas

Carnaval Tableño is celebrated in Las Tablas and is considered one of Panama’s most representative carnivals. A defining tradition is the Topón in Parque Porras: Calle Abajo approaches from Punta Fogón, while Calle Arriba comes from Calle Bolívar. The two meet in the park. The gathering brings together tradition, music and elegance, with fireworks at both ends of the park. These elements make the Topón a distinctive highlight of the carnival tradition; its specific form may vary.

Pollera Festival and festival dates

The Festival Nacional de la Pollera takes place every year on July 22 in Las Tablas, as part of the patron saint festivities in honor of Santa Librada. Its history dates back to the mid-20th century: the festival was established by municipal resolution in 1957, followed by its formalization under Law No. 50 of November 24, 1961. July 22 is therefore both an annual festival date and one with a clearly documented history. When planning your trip, check the specific arrangements for that year.

The competitions focus on polleras de labor and polleras montunas. Craft techniques are judged in the categories of sombreada, calada, marcada, zurcida and bordada. Experienced craftswomen also assess the grace and traditional wearing of the pollera. The festival thus encompasses both the making of the garment and its presentation. The patron saint celebration and festival program also includes competitions for children’s traditional dress, violin, accordion and tamborito, as well as craft competitions for the camisilla, sombrero pintao and sombrero de junco. Individual events may change.

The Concurso Nacional de la Camisilla y el Sombrero is held every year on July 21. If you want to plan your trip around a particular competition, check the arrangements for that year in advance.

Polleras, crafts and music

Polleras are part of local cultural traditions beyond the competitions: residents of Las Tablas make crafts and sew polleras. In the district of Las Tablas, polleras, Panama’s national dress, are made entirely by hand with floral patterns. Embroidery techniques include cross-stitch, zurcida and sombreada.

Traditional goldsmithing also encompasses a variety of work, including milagro pendants, religious pieces, crowns and replicas of pre-Columbian objects. Pollera accessories such as combs, hair ornaments and earrings known as zarcillos are also made. Craftsmanship and traditional dress come together in several areas: textile work, jewelry and other goldwork.

The music of the Tableña region includes tamborito, cumbia, mejorana and murga. These musical styles can often be heard every day in the provincial capital, Las Tablas, and in nearby towns. The regional context is important: this tradition belongs to the Tableña region and is not confined to the town itself.

Museum and architectural history

The Museo Belisario Porras is located in Parque Porras in Las Tablas and commemorates Belisario Porras. Exhibits include military clothing, photographs, documents, diplomas, books, medals and other personal belongings. The collection brings together different kinds of mementos, from written records to personal objects.

The Iglesia de Santa Librada de Las Tablas is another historic landmark: its construction began between 1671 and 1679, and the church was completed in 1725. The Escuela Presidente Porras opened as the Escuela Modelo in 1924. Its building was designed by Peruvian architect Leonardo Villanueva Meyer. These architectural histories add another perspective on Las Tablas to its festival and craft traditions, without requiring a particular event as a reason to visit.
