Mahdah can be explored through several geographical layers: the Wilayat of Mahdah is in Al Buraymi Governorate and belongs to the wider Buraimi destination. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the broader regional surroundings, the wilayat and the larger destination. Falaj systems, historic buildings and landscapes can be found in each of these contexts.

Falaj and Water Landscape

The Mahdah Oasis Falaj lies in the wider regional surroundings of Mahdah. It is a Dawoodi falaj, 4,700 metres long, with seven branches. In the village of Misah in the Wilayat of Mahdah, there are two irrigation channels: one carries fresh water, while the other carries sulphurous water. The Misah Dam, built in 2011, has a capacity of 300,000 cubic metres. Misah is nestled between mountains and enjoys a mild climate year-round. The waterworks, village and mountain landscape offer different perspectives on the wilayat.

Bayt Al Nad: Fort of the Wilayat of Mahdah

Bayt Al Nad is considered the largest and oldest fort in the Wilayat of Mahdah. It is believed to date back to before the 18th century. Its distinctive geometric design is a defining feature. Historically, the fort served as a residence for sheikhs and military personnel; it also includes a prison. The fort’s design and its former use offer two different ways to explore its history.

Hiking, Dunes and Activities

The Wilayat of Mahdah offers opportunities for hiking, camping and exploration. Its best-known sand dunes include Kahl, Safwan and Tal Aniq. The Falaj Mahdah hiking trail is described as one of the best routes in the wilayat. Alongside historic buildings, hikes and landscapes are therefore also options to consider when planning your trip.

The Wider Setting: Buraimi

In the wider Buraimi destination, the Wilayat of Mahdah is a popular place in winter for excursions, camping and exploring wadis, mountains and dunes. The Sands of Mahddah also invite visitors to camp under the open sky and enjoy sand sports in winter. These activities are seasonal and complement the wilayat’s cultural attractions with an outdoor focus.

Other landscapes in the Buraimi destination can be seen along the Al-Khatwa Village Circular Trail, which passes through plantations and the Falaj Al Khatwa Oasis. Wadi Al Qahfi features several pools surrounded by palm trees and flowering oleander. The two examples differ in character: a circular trail through plantations and a landscape with pools.

Hamasa also brings together cultural history and distinctive features of the place. The village was a historic trading centre connecting Oman with neighbouring countries. The historic quarter of Hamasa is estimated to be more than 500 years old. It comprises two neighbourhoods, a marketplace and several towers linked by Falaj Al Jaimi.

The wider Buraimi context also includes falaj systems in other wilayats. Falaj Al Rayhani in the Wilayat of Al Sunaina has an underground source and irrigates extensive areas of fields and palm groves. Falaj Al Saarani in Shari’a is a Dawoodi falaj; it is estimated to be about 3,000 years old and extends for 6,500 metres. One example draws attention to its source and irrigation, the other to its estimated age and length.
