Ibri brings together a fort with historic inscriptions and towers and the archaeological site of Harāt Al-Raml in the town centre. Nearby, you’ll also find Al Sulaif Fort, the village of Al-Salif and Al-Kittan Cave. These places offer different points of interest: fortified structures, archaeological traces, traditional architecture and geological formations.

Fort and archaeological site in the centre

Ibri Fort is about 400 years old and is known for its historic inscriptions and ancient relics. Its three towers are Al-Sarm, Al Ghorabiya and Sabah Al Sensila. Their names help distinguish the towers as specific parts of the fort; together with the inscriptions, they shape its historical profile as described here.

Also in the centre of Ibri is Harāt Al-Raml, an archaeological site that is more than 300 years old. The fort and the site represent different types of cultural heritage: the fort is notable for its inscriptions, relics and towers, while Harāt Al-Raml is notable for its character as an archaeological site. History enthusiasts can therefore explore different themes within Ibri itself, without treating the places as one and the same.

Nearby places: Al Sulaif, Al-Salif and Al-Kittan

Nearby Al Sulaif Fort was built in 1718 during the Ya'ariba rule by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al-Yarubi. It lies at the foot of Mount Shanboh, overlooking Wadi Al-Salif, and is surrounded by a massive wall and seven towers. Compared with the three towers of Ibri Fort, the number of towers offers a concrete point of difference between the two forts; their construction histories also mark distinct periods.

The village of Al-Salif is five kilometres from the centre of Ibri. It has 110 ancient houses, a traditional market and traditional Omani architecture. If you’re choosing between focusing your visit on the town centre or exploring the village, the distinct character of the area and the architectural forms mentioned here can help guide you.

Another nearby feature is Al-Kittan Cave, also known as the Marble Cave. It is eight kilometres from Ibri and has a strong marble-like sheen, geological formations and rock inscriptions. Access to and entry into the cave are difficult; a guide is recommended. This natural and geological setting differs markedly from the forts and the archaeological site.

Az Zahira: regional context beyond Ibri

In the wider Az Zahira region is the archaeological complex of Bat, al-Khutm and al-Ayn. It is an exceptionally complete and well-preserved ensemble of settlements and necropolises dating from the 3rd millennium BC. The core area lies in the present-day village of Bat in Wadi Sharsah, about 24 kilometres east of the city of Ibri, in Al-Dhahira Governorate in north-western Oman. The necropolis of Bat includes about 350 stone-built tombs and a large settlement area; the al-Ayn section of the complex includes 21 well-preserved beehive tombs.

Other distinct cultural heritage sites in the wider Az Zahira region include Beit Al-Marrah Fort, near the remains of an old mud-brick village. Several buildings surround the fort, including a traditionally built mosque. In Dhank, historic Al-Manikh Fort is a prominent landmark associated with the area’s past and former way of life. In Yanqul, the ruins of traditional architecture remain in Harat Al-Shabaniyah: remnants of old rooms, doors and windows, as well as outdoor tannur ovens.

The landscapes of the wider Az Zahira region offer a different perspective from its historic buildings. Wadi Al-Fath features geological rock formations; at its end is an elevated rock that appears to float in the air. Wadi Fida is suitable for a walk among lush fields along its banks, although conditions can vary by season. At Wadi Damm, waterways converge to form Wadi Al-Ain. The area is considered suitable for camping, with opportunities to observe wildlife and the night sky; weather and access affect conditions.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Ibri, first consider whether your stay will focus mainly on the central historic sites and nearby destinations, or whether you’d also like to include other cultural and landscape attractions in the wider Az Zahira region.
