In Vinje, winter sports, literature, wartime history and traces of timber rafting come together. Discover the area not only through its ski areas, but also through museums, hiking trails and places where history is visible in the landscape. Which of these aspects you focus on depends entirely on your interests.
Winter sports in various forms
For skiing, there are two offerings with different focuses: Rauland Skisenter operates the Vierli, Tiur and Holtardalen ski areas, with a total of 12 lifts and 26 runs. Vinje also has more than 150 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in Åmot, Våmartveit, Kostveit and Øyfjell. Trail distances and grooming can vary from season to season; check the current conditions when planning your trip.
Literature, journalism and history
The Vinjesenteret is a museum dedicated to literature and journalism. Its focus is on Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, Aslaug Vaa, Tarjei Vesaas and Halldis Moren Vesaas. Exhibitions, games about source criticism, a children’s trail and a reading corner offer different ways to explore the museum’s themes. If you are particularly interested in reading and writing, the museum visit also introduces journalism and how to evaluate sources, alongside the authors. Guided tours of Vinjestoga can be booked from May to November.
The Forsvarsmuseet in Vinje has a different historical focus. It mainly covers the fighting at Vinjesvingen in 1940 and everyday life during the Second World War. The museum is open for guided tours during the summer season; outside the season, guided visits can be booked by arrangement. The Smørklepp kunstmuseum complements the cultural offerings with an extensive collection of paintings by Henrik Sørensen and Harald Kihle. Its opening hours are seasonal.
Paths through cultural landscapes and bathing spots
The Fløtarvegen follows Hyllandsfoss and explores traces of timber rafting, old stone walls, mills and power-generation facilities. This family-friendly hiking trail has several resting places by the river and spots for swimming on warm days. At Spegle Hyllandsfoss in Åmot, a sauna stands on a historic stone wall dating back to Vinje’s timber-rafting history. A sturdy wooden bridge leads to the sauna; the area is also set up for a refreshing swim in Hyllandshylen.
Around Ormetjønn in Åmot, outdoor recreation also goes hand in hand with local history: this family-friendly excursion area has a circular trail and a child-friendly beach. Signposted detours lead to the remains of former smallholdings and to Trolldomssteinen. If you are looking for a route with a specified distance and elevation, you can follow the clearly marked path from Kappelnuten to Fonnlinuten: it is about 2.7 kilometres long and reaches a summit at 650 metres above sea level. From there, the view stretches towards Åmot.
Getting your bearings and a seasonal stop
In Edland, Reinparken includes a cycling facility, a jogging and hiking trail, and a bathing spot. It also caters to tourists, other travellers passing through and visitors to Vinje. Mjonøy offers another seasonal stop: its wood-fired bakery is known for fresh pastries from the stone oven and is open from around Easter until autumn. As seasonal opening hours can change, it is worth checking the latest hours before your visit. For travel planning: Vinje is located on the E134 between eastern and western Norway.
