Discover Hjartdal along its trails, among its cultural heritage and through its local craft traditions. The connection between natural and cultural landscapes is particularly distinctive: it can be seen in a protected area, on routes through several valleys, and in places where farming and grain processing remain part of life today.
Landscape and trails
The Brattefjell-Vindeggen Landscape Protection Area covers parts of Hjartdal. It protects unspoiled high-mountain and mountain forest landscapes, a wild reindeer population, a rich variety of plant and animal life, as well as valuable cultural landscapes and cultural monuments. This is distinct from the nationwide recognition of Hjartdal together with Svartdal as a selected and particularly valuable cultural landscape.
The 25-kilometre Sogevegen cycling route runs through Hjartdal, Svartdal and Flatdal; you can start your ride in Gvammen in Hjartdal. Cultural landscapes, art and stories are among the route’s defining features. Holm Landhandel is also part of Sogevegen. As road conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest situation before setting out.
Getting around on foot and in winter
Prestevegen offers a different way to explore: the hiking trail passes through mountain and forest terrain between Fellessetra in Hjartdal and Hogstul in Tuddal. The hike is listed as taking six to eight hours. Markers bearing the letter P and around 20 name signs show the way; there are several campsites along the route. Trail conditions may vary by season. Check the markers and camping conditions locally.
The two routes differ primarily in how you travel and the time required: Sogevegen is described as a 25-kilometre cycling route, while Prestevegen is a six-to-eight-hour hike. In winter, ski trails are groomed around the Kjerringstein Trail in Tuddal. Grooming may vary seasonally; check the latest conditions in advance.
Discover the cultural landscape
The Kulturlandskapssenteret offers guided tours, lectures and cultural programmes about agricultural cultural landscapes. Groups are welcomed by arrangement; coordinate the programme details accordingly. The visitor area is located at Holm Landhandel and at the nearby Kulturlandskapsskulen. This gives you a chance to encounter cultural landscape themes both in the centre’s programme and along Sogevegen, whose character is shaped by landscapes, art and stories.
Tuddal Bygdetun is an open-air museum in Hjartdal Municipality. Its collection includes 13 traditional farm buildings; the oldest dates from the 17th century. Seasonal opening arrangements apply. The buildings give tangible form to the historical cultural heritage, while Hjartdal’s cultural landscape is also shaped by agriculture and its produce.
Mill, water and crafts
At Egderudfossen, Hjartdal Bygdemylle offers guided tours of the mill and a themed exhibition on farming and the history of grain in the mountain villages. If you are planning a tour, check the arrangements locally in advance. The mill still produces barley flour in different degrees of fineness and pearl barley. The exhibition and ongoing production thus represent different aspects of grain processing.
At the same waterfall, there is a paved bathing area with natural rock pools. The stepped bridge Myllestigen offers lovely views and safe access closer to the water. If you are interested in local crafts, you can visit Funnerfellen at the Øvre Funner farm, where sheepskins are made into colourful rugs and decorated with unique patterns called Skinnfellroser.
Produce, food and traditions
Following old local traditions, Nordbø Gard og Stule makes cheese, butter, sour cream and Prim, and offers demonstrations on making cheese and dairy products. Demonstrations are arranged seasonally. In July and August, Bjordal Stule is open to everyone; traditional Rømmegrøt, coffee and waffles are served there. As seasonal dates may change, check the details before visiting.
The scythe-mowing festival is also part of Hjartdal’s traditions: it has been held every summer since 2000 and features competitions in the traditional art of scythe mowing. If you plan to attend, check the specific dates. For a quieter break, Saga Sauna is located by Lake Hjartsåvatnet at the Presteodden rest area and offers views across Hjartsjåvatnet. Booking and operating conditions may change, so check them before making plans.
