Otteid can be understood through two historical themes: cross-border timber trade and the Otteid Canal. For centuries, the town was a central timber transshipment point between Sweden and Norway. The canal was dug from 1825 to 1827; during this work, the area around Skinnarbutjernet was also dammed. The Otteid Canal was in operation from 1827 to 1956. The construction and operating periods mark different stages: construction was followed by use that lasted for more than a century. This gives Otteid a clear focus for travellers interested in trade history and water engineering.

Timber Trade and Border History

The history of cross-border domestic trade also includes the former Otteid customs station. The purpose-built building, dating from the early 20th century, was used to control trade with Sweden. As a significant example of a purpose-built customs station in terms of sector and cultural history, it adds to the picture of the movement of goods. Timber transshipment and customs control are two distinct aspects: Otteid was a timber transshipment point between Sweden and Norway, while the station controlled cross-border domestic trade with Sweden.

Preserved Traces of the Otteid Canal

The walls at Østre and Vestre Otteid are still standing. At Vestre Otteid, the Kjerrat, a timber transport installation, is also partially preserved. The Otteid Canal and the Kjerrat were declared cultural heritage sites by the Municipality of Marker in 1997. In addition, the area of the Otteid Canal has been designated as a special conservation area. The 1997 heritage designation applies to the canal and the Kjerrat; the conservation-area designation, by contrast, applies to the area of the Otteid Canal.

Swimming and Paddling at Stora Lee

The Østre Otteid bathing area is located on the freshwater lake Stora Lee. The Østre Otteid outdoor recreation area at Otteidvika is set up for swimming and small-boat tourism. Near Otteid, short and long canoe and kayak excursions are possible on Stora Lee; from there, paddlers can continue to the Dalsland Canal. This offers different ways to spend time on the water: the bathing area and small-boat tourism at Østre Otteid, or excursions on the lake, which can be short or long.

Routes and Accommodation

Walking can also be part of your plans: the Otteid Trail near the Otteid Canal has three routes of different lengths. Route length is a useful point of comparison when weighing up a route against a focus on the lake or the historical sites. Check the latest information on routes and accessibility before setting out. When looking for a holiday apartment in Otteid, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you prefer to explore traces of the canal, timber trade and customs history, or plan for the bathing area and activities on Stora Lee?

In the wider destination of Marker, Basmo Fortress offers another historical perspective. The fortress was built in the late 17th century as part of the Oplandske fortifications on the road between Stockholm and Christiania. It stands on a hill between Rødenessjøen and Hemnessjøen. This regional fortification adds another historical focus to Otteid’s canal and trade history.
