Attacked six times and never captured in battle: Fredriksten Fortress makes a striking historical impression in Halden. For more than 300 years, it was a central part of Norway’s border defences. Museums, church architecture and riverside paths add to the historical programme. This lets you choose between fortress and city history and time outdoors during your stay.

Fortress and City History

The grounds of Fredriksten Fortress are open around the clock. Museums and events have their own opening hours; check them if you are planning a visit. The grounds have walking paths and viewpoints. The Fredriksten Museum is located in the Østre Kurtine and presents Halden’s wartime history and life at the fortress from the 17th century until the dissolution of the union in 1905.

The Halden Prison Museum offers a different perspective. It features a fully restored prison from 1863 with twelve cells and is located in the only surviving district prison from Norway’s former network of district prisons. The museum offers insights into life behind prison walls. It is open to groups interested in its history; group arrangements should be confirmed in advance.

The Halden Museum – FayegĂ„rden presents Halden’s history through exhibitions, events and family-friendly experiences in a historic building dating from 1830. The exhibition “Halden Can: Factories & People” introduces entrepreneurs and workers who contributed to Halden’s industrial development in the 19th and 20th centuries. Individual exhibitions and events may change; check before your visit to see whether this exhibition is still on display.

Architecture and performing arts also have their own highlights. Immanuel Church in the centre is a whitewashed masonry cruciform church, designed predominantly in the Empire style and built in 1833. Its side entrance is wheelchair accessible, although the doors can make it somewhat narrow. Accessibility may change during construction work; if needed, check the current situation before your visit. RĂžd HerregĂ„rd is one of Norway’s best-preserved manor houses. Fredrikshalds Teater is a lively venue for performing arts and public engagement. If you are planning to attend an event, check its dates.

Walks and Cycling Routes

Halden city centre has riverside promenades and a guest harbour. A walking path runs along the Tista River and follows the signs to RÞd HerregÄrd. This lets you combine your stay with outdoor activity without requiring a particular walking time or distance.

The cycling loop in the city centre is 2.8 kilometres long, rated easy, and starts and ends at Halden Gjestehavn. Its stated season runs from March to September. Route details may be updated seasonally; check them before setting off. For longer walks, the pilgrimage route through Halden is about 50 kilometres long. Its Borgleden section runs from the border waterfall along the Iddefjord or National Road 220 through the city centre. This gives you the choice of a clearly defined cycling loop or a much longer pilgrimage route.
