On Tinian, House of Taga is a cultural landmark: it is an ancient Chamorro stone structure. However, the Northern Mariana Islands cannot be understood through just one type of site. On Rota, cave paintings and latte stones are in focus; on Saipan, there is also a scenic trail, a former hospital, and a museum. This lets you encounter cultural history and more recent history in different forms.

Stone and Cave Paintings on Rota

The As Nieves Latte Stone Quarry on Rota consists of nine latte pillars and seven capstones at different stages of completion. Alongside the forms themselves, these stages draw attention to the process of stoneworking. The Chugai Pictograph Site offers a different perspective: about ninety images are painted on the walls of a natural cave. The contrast lies in the medium of expression: worked stone forms on one hand, images on cave walls on the other. Together, they give you two clearly distinct perspectives on Rota’s cultural history.

Tonga Cave adds a specific historical use to these sites: before concrete houses were built, Rota residents used the cave as shelter during typhoons. This perspective broadens the view from architectural and pictorial evidence to how people dealt with typhoons. The historical context matters: the cave served as protection in an earlier period of building and living.

Saipan: Scenic Trail and History

The 1.2-mile scenic trail in American Memorial Park on Saipan is suitable for walking, jogging, cycling, roller skating, and skateboarding. Its length and range of uses give you practical points to consider when planning. Check the trail’s current conditions before your visit.

The former Japanese Hospital on Saipan provided medical care to the people of Saipan from 1926 until it was abandoned in 1944 during the Battle of Saipan. In 1974, the former hospital was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The dates mark different periods: its medical use, its abandonment during the battle, and its later historic designation. The year 1974 refers to the listing, not to another period of operation.

The Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture is located in the former Japanese Hospital. Its exhibitions cover the settlement of the islands through the political negotiations of the 1970s that led to the establishment of the present-day U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The scope thus connects the history of settlement with the political development of today’s commonwealth. It offers a different perspective from the history of the hospital’s operations: the focus is on the islands and their political formation.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

Food also plays a role in festivals. Saipan hosts the Taste of The Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden every Saturday in May. The Pika Festival on Tinian celebrates the island’s hot pepper, considered one of the hottest in the world. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates and details for the relevant year in advance.
