The path to Togo descends through jagged coral pinnacles to a grassy plain and a chasm. At its foot is a beach with fine golden sand. This sequence gives Niue’s landscape a distinct character: coral formations, plain, chasm and coast lie along the same route. Other perspectives range from diving and the seasonal migration of humpback whales to village festivals and local crafts.

Coral Paths and Coastal Formations

The path to Togo begins about 4 km north of Hakupu. The hike is moderate to challenging and descends from the jagged coral pinnacles to the plain and through a chasm to the beach. If you consider a route’s character when planning, you’ll find specific details here: the approximate starting point, the level of difficulty and the sequence of different landscape features.

The routes to Limu and the Talava Arches also have clearly identified landmarks. A well-marked path to Limu begins at the northern end of Namukulu village; picnic areas are available. The also well-marked walking track to the Talava Arches branches off to the right from the access path to Matapa Chasm. The routes therefore differ not only in their destinations, but also in their described starting points and turnoffs.

Whales, Diving and Marine Conservation

Humpback whales pass through Niue’s waters approximately between July and September. Encounters with them are possible only with licensed operators. If you’re including this experience in your trip plans, check with licensed operators in advance about the specific options.

When diving, you can explore grottos, caves, coral walls and drop-offs. Niue’s hard coral reefs are also a habitat for several endemic species. The Alofi North Marine Reserve sets a different, clear boundary: it is a no-take zone, but visitors may use the picnic facilities.

Fishing also offers a range of options. Fishing experiences include traditional fishing from a vaka (canoe) and catching flying fish with nets. Several professional operators also run fishing trips on charter boats.

Village Life, the Market and Crafts

The Makete market in the centre of Alofi takes place on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Market hours may change; check the current schedule locally. Traditional foods available in Niue include coconut crab (uga), taro (talo), breadfruit, cassava and shellfish. The availability of many market foods may depend on the season.

Each of the fourteen villages holds an annual village festival featuring local cuisine, crafts, sports, cultural presentations and performances. At these festivals, visitors can also sample food prepared in an earth oven (umu). The annual event thus combines a varied programme with a specific opportunity to discover local cuisine.

Local women’s groups demonstrate how crafts are made using coconut and pandanus leaves. With some weaving groups, you can make a piece yourself and take it home for a fee. Taking part yourself is therefore subject to these groups and the fee; it is not the same as watching a demonstration.

You can also meet local producers who grow and harvest Niue’s vanilla. Ask about specific visiting opportunities before your trip. Together with the market and village festivals, this provides another perspective on local produce and everyday life on the island.
