Osun is especially striking for the way Yoruba tradition and landscape come together. The Osun Sacred Grove is many centuries old and is considered the home of Osun, the goddess of fertility and one of the Yoruba deities. As the largest surviving sacred grove, it continues to be revered; religious services are held there daily, weekly and monthly. This place thus brings together great age and an enduring religious role.

Its religious significance is tied to a specific landscape: the Osun River winds through the forest of the Sacred Grove. Two palaces, five sacred sites and nine places of prayer are located along the riverbanks. The grove also contains forty shrines, sculptures and works of art honouring Osun and other Yoruba deities. More than 400 plant species grow there, including some endemic species. The river, forest, worship and art are all part of the same place; culture and nature cannot be separated here.

Ile-Ife: Origins and tradition

Ile-Ife offers a different cultural perspective. According to Yoruba tradition, Ife is the ancestral and spiritual home of all Yoruba people. Tradition holds that the creation of the world began here; this is associated with the name “Land of the Source”. While this account links Ile-Ife with origins and creation, the Sacred Grove is defined by worship and everyday religious life. These are two related but distinct ways of approaching Yoruba tradition.

Important places in Ile-Ife include the Ife Museum of Antiquities, the Okemogun Shrine, the Oduduwa Palace, the Zoological Gardens and the Odua Shrine. Before visiting, check whether each place is accessible; for the Zoological Gardens, you should also check whether they are currently operating. The Moremi Statue of Liberty was erected in honour of Queen Moremi Ajasoro. The named sites and the monument represent different cultural points of reference: the tradition about the origin of the world and the tribute to Queen Moremi Ajasoro do not tell the same story.

Landscape and named places

The Ibodi Monkey Reserve is a monkey forest in the Atakumosa West Local Government Area of Osun State. The Olumirin Waterfall is also known as Erin Ijesha Waterfall; its name comes from the town of Erin-Ijesha. This connection between the names helps with orientation: Olumirin Waterfall and Erin Ijesha Waterfall are not two different waterfalls, but two names for the same place.

The Nike Art Centre is located in Osogbo; the Owa Obokun Statue stands at the Ilesha Roundabout in Osun State. If you are planning a visit, check current accessibility in advance. The range of topics extends from religious practice and origin stories to art, forest and waterfall. When planning your trip, you can first decide which aspect interests you most: the continuing worship at the Sacred Grove, the traditions and named places in Ile-Ife, or the natural sites.
