When planning a trip to Nueva Segovia, it helps to organize your interests: water and vegetation, hiking and views, or handicrafts and history. The specific destinations are located in different places, so this is not a ready-made route. If you first decide what matters most to you, you can better match each place to your own travel plans.

Nature among pools, forests and viewpoints

Las pilitas in Mozonte is a natural formation of seven pools of clear water, surrounded by lush vegetation. Water conditions may vary. Salto El Rosario in Murra offers a different experience: the waterfall is 120 meters high and surrounded by pristine forest. Water flows there in both winter and summer; rainfall doubles the volume of water. The pools and vegetation are the main features of Las pilitas, while Salto El Rosario stands out for its height and the increased water flow after rain.

At Loma Santa in Mozonte, 127 steps lead to a chapel and a grotto dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. From there, you can see the entire urban area of Mozonte. Mirador Coquimba in Dipilto is a natural viewpoint and a destination for hiking. Serranía Dipilto y Jalapa Nature Reserve in Jalapa is associated with hiking, observing flora and fauna, and admiring the landscape. Cerro Mogotón in San Fernando is also a destination for hiking and observing flora and fauna. At the national level, Cerro Mogotón, at 2,107 meters, is considered Nicaragua’s highest point.

Hiking, admiring the landscape and water sports are among the activities available at Cañón de los Cerros Pegados in Santa María. Ropes are recommended for climbing the rocks. The options therefore range from nature observation and views to activities on the water and among the rocks.

Handicrafts, cuisine and historic sites

In Jalapa, two groups of craftswomen in the communities of La Palmera and El Escambray make colorful household items from pine needles. These include hats, plates, cups and ashtrays. The range of products therefore extends from hats to everyday items.

Traditional tamales from Mozonte also give the local cuisine a distinctive character: tamal pisque, tamal dulce and tamal nesquizado are prepared using time-honored techniques. In Ocotal, Casa museo Santa María de los Rivas houses sacred art from various parts of the world.

Cueva del Duende in Santa María is associated with paintings of ethnic origin on its rock walls. According to local tradition, a duende is said to live there. The connection to the Sandino Route is an important part of the history of the former gold mines of San Albino in El Jícaro. Minas de Guano in Macuelizo are former gold mines that were exploited during Spanish rule. The historical connections differ: San Albino is linked to the Sandino Route, while Guano is associated with the mining history of Spanish rule.
