Marimba and dance classes at a former railway station, hands-on spinning in the San Juan neighborhood, and a market where you can watch craft techniques in action: Masaya offers several different ways to experience its culture. It also hosts long-standing events on seasonal dates. If you’re planning your trip around a particular activity, check class schedules and that year’s festival calendar in advance.

Crafts and culture in the city

At Plaza de la Cultura (Antigua Estación del Ferrocarril), visitors can learn about the site’s history and take part in marimba and dance classes. Check the current class schedule before your visit. In the San Juan neighborhood, craftswomen at the “Hamacas CMK” workshop offer hands-on spinning; check the date in advance for this activity too.

The Handicrafts Market of Masaya in the city center combines the sale of crafts and traditional products with the opportunity to watch craft techniques in action. The activities are distinct: classes and local history at the plaza, hands-on spinning in San Juan, and sales and live demonstrations in the center.

Launched in April 2026, the Circuito Creativo de Masaya covers notable places around the city: family workshops, venues for arts and cultural education, and places for recreation, leisure and commerce. It brings together different kinds of urban activities within a creative framework.

Traditional events in October and November

The nighttime ProcesiĂłn de AgĂĽizotes takes place every year on the last Friday in October and begins at Plaza Magdalena in the Indigenous community of MonimbĂł. The Torovenado del Pueblo takes place annually on the last Sunday in October and starts in the Indigenous neighborhood of MonimbĂł. The Los Diablitos dance is held in November: in Masaya, it takes place on the last Sunday of the month and begins at Parque San JerĂłnimo.

The traditions mentioned are therefore spread across two time periods: the ProcesiĂłn de AgĂĽizotes and the Torovenado are listed for late October, while Los Diablitos takes place on the last Sunday in November. Exact event dates may vary from year to year; check the dates for your trip in advance.

The wider destination of Masaya: nature and culture

Beyond the city’s culture, the wider destination of Masaya also offers landscapes, wildlife and regional museums. The Reserva Natural Sistema Lagunar de Tisma serves as a resting and feeding area for numerous land and water bird species. Tisma includes water-rich areas characterized by wetlands; the landscape is connected to the area’s location a few meters above the level of Lake Nicaragua. Birdwatching is one of its main attractions, especially from September to November, when migratory birds join the resident tropical species.

Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya offers guided tours about the local flora and fauna. A visitor center or museum complements them with information about Nicaragua’s active and dormant volcanoes. In Nindirí, Iglesia Santa Ana preserves two wood-carved lions of Castile. The church was built of adobe bricks in 1529, renovated in 1798, and designated national historical heritage.

The museums also have different areas of focus: Museo Etnográfico Nacudarí includes a gallery of Nicaraguan paintings and offers tours on local history and ethnography. The collection at Museo Arqueológico Tenderí in Nindirí includes pre-Columbian stone and clay sculptures, traditional dance masks, old weapons and photographs of petroglyphs. In Nindirí, annual cultural festivals in honor of Santa Ana and Santiago Apóstol are usually held from July 24 to 28.

For a culinary perspective, the Ruta del Mondongo in Masatepe connects restaurants specializing in this traditional dish. Another scenic destination is Laguna de Apoyo, accessible via the road between Masaya and Granada. From the turnoff, the route first follows an unpaved road south and then a steep paved road to the lagoon. Check road conditions before setting out.
