In the Municipality of Managua, you will find a range of cultural activities and places to visit, from museums and theatres to walks and ferry rides. The Department of Managua broadens the picture with volcanic lagoons, protected areas and nature trails. Planning around your interests lets you distinguish between local cultural attractions and regional nature highlights.

Museums and stages in the Municipality of Managua

The two-storey house that is home to the Casa Museo “Comandante Julio Buitrago” bears marks on its façade from heavy artillery fire. The exhibition features photographs and personal belongings of Julio Buitrago. The Parque Museo de la Victoria Sandinista “Carlos Fonseca” offers a different way to explore history: it is an open-air museum with an educational mission. The Museo Nacional de Nicaragua is a public educational institution. Its mission includes collecting, rescuing, preserving, researching and interpreting Nicaragua’s cultural and natural heritage.

The Museo Nacional de Nicaragua “Diocleciano Chávez” offers informative guided tours of its galleries, as well as archaeological and historical objects. The Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío offers tours of its halls and cultural events such as dance, theatre and music. The Teatro Justo Rufino Garay also hosts events in these fields. If you want to plan a theatre visit around a particular performance, check the current schedule in advance.

Market, ferry rides and walks

The Mercado Nacional de ArtesanĂa Roberto Huembes offers handicrafts, food and other amenities. Individual vendors and offerings may change. If you are coming for a particular offering, it is best to check in advance. Ferry rides, food and drinks are available at Puerto Salvador Allende; activities for children are also offered. If you are planning a ferry ride, it is worth checking the schedule in advance. The availability of individual services may vary.

At the Arboretum Nacional, you can take nature walks and photograph the surroundings. Another walk takes you to Parque Central de Managua: before the 1972 earthquake, Managua’s city centre was located there. A visit to a natural site is therefore different from a walk around a place whose history is tied to the former city centre.

Managua in its wider regional context

The Department of Managua stretches from the Pacific coast to the shore of Lake Xolotlán. Its protected areas include the Chiltepe Peninsula and the Chocoyero–El Brujo Nature Reserve. Chiltepe is home to two crater lakes surrounded by tropical forest and includes the Apoyeque Caldera, with its namesake lagoon, as well as the Xiloá volcanic lagoon. The department is also home to the volcanic lagoons Asososca, Tiscapa, Apoyeque and Xiloá.

On the Chiltepe Peninsula, a hiking trail leads to the western rim of the Apoyeque Caldera. Rowing, sailing and swimming are offered at Laguna de Xiloá. In the Chocoyero–El Brujo Nature Reserve, the Sendero El Congo is 1,300 metres long and takes one hour to complete. Along the way, you can observe animal tracks and primates. The Sendero El Chocoyero leads to the colonies where the reserve’s characteristic species nests. The trails have different focuses: El Congo combines trail length and duration with opportunities to observe wildlife along the way, while El Chocoyero leads to the nesting colonies.

The wider Managua destination also has its own cultural history: the Museo Nacional de Nicaragua “Diocleciano Chaves” was founded in 1897 and has been located in the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura in Managua’s historic centre since 1997. In the wider regional context, visitors can also learn about the history of the popular uprising against the Somoza dynasty at the Parque Museo de la Victoria Sandinista “Carlos Fonseca”.
