For trip planning in Waitara, the historic railway, Waitara Heritage Trail and Waitara River offer different points of interest. The train ride has a clear timeframe; the trail and river bring local history and water sports into focus.

Ride the Heritage Railway

Taranaki's Heritage Railway departs from Queen Street in Waitara on a historic train. The journey follows the preserved 150-year-old Waitara Branch Line to Lepperton Junction and back. Each trip takes 70 to 80 minutes. Public train rides run on the first and third Sundays of each month. Check the operator's journey information before planning your preferred date.

Trail, local history and river

The Waitara Heritage Trail runs along the Waitara River from West Quay in the town centre to Marine Park, near the river mouth. The boardwalk features ten carved panels depicting Waitara's flora and fauna. The river itself flows through Waitara and is popular for kayaking and white-water rafting.

The Waitara Pill Box adds a specific Second World War story to this historical perspective: the Home Guard formed at the time used it to defend the stretch of coast between Waipapa Stream and Waiongana River. This differs from the carved panels on the Heritage Trail: here, the focus is on the wartime defence role of a named place.

For practical information, parking and toilets are available in Waitara town centre and at the playground in Marine Park. As these facilities may change, check the information before your visit. Take the parking and toilet information at either location into account when planning your stay.

More attractions in the New Plymouth District

The Coastal Walkway in the New Plymouth District offers a distinct coastal focus. The route is 13.2 km long and runs from Pioneer Park at Port Taranaki to the eastern side of Bell Block Beach. A section from the Waiwhakaiho River to the car park on Smeaton Road provides access to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. While the Waitara Heritage Trail follows the river to Marine Park, this route runs along the coast; the routes described therefore have different landscape focuses.

Puke Ariki is another attraction in the New Plymouth District. The museum has three permanent exhibition galleries covering the region's history, taonga and natural world. Admission to all areas is free; as admission arrangements may change, check visitor information before your visit. A guided alternative is the Puke Ariki Historic Walk: the tour passes through central New Plymouth, is about 3 km long and takes two hours. At 70 to 80 minutes, the train ride in Waitara is shorter than the two-hour Historic Walk. Dates and booking conditions for the Historic Walk may change; check them before making plans.
