Arrowtown brings together historic sites and trails through varied landscapes. Discover its gold-mining history in the buildings of Buckingham Street and at the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement; museums and galleries add to its cultural appeal. For planning your visit, there are also several trails to choose from, each with distinct landscapes and levels of difficulty.

Gold-mining history in Arrowtown

A significant group of historic buildings dating from the 1870s still stands on Buckingham Street. Miners’ cottages and small stone buildings connect both to the history of gold mining and to Arrowtown’s social history. Visitors interested in the town’s development will find tangible architectural evidence here, rather than just a general account of the gold rush.

Another key site is the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement. Following an archaeological excavation in December 1983, the settlement was partially restored. Detailed information panels in English and Chinese tell the story of the region’s Chinese gold miners. Five reconstructed hut sites illustrate how people lived at the time. Within the wider Queenstown Lakes District destination, the settlement is classified as a Category 2 public historic place. It is considered the last relatively intact Chinese settlement remaining in Otago and recalls the Chinese presence on the goldfields of Central Otago.

The paths through the settlement are also practical: the main path is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Check the current path conditions before your visit, so you can take both the historic sites and your route plans into account.

Museum, gallery and art venues

The Lakes District Museum & Gallery tells the stories of tangata whenua, gold miners and settlers. Exhibits include a reconstructed grog shanty, a Victorian schoolhouse and a blacksmith’s workshop. Together, they cover a range of themes and aspects of historic life. A gallery space hosts changing exhibitions of works by local artists, which are offered for sale; the exhibition programme varies.

The museum offers private guided tours of Arrowtown for groups and individuals. Visitors who prefer to explore galleries, studios and museums with a guide can use the Arrowtown Arts Trail, an interactive guide to these venues based on Google Maps. Participating venues may change. The Arts Trail and a guided tour are different ways to discover Arrowtown’s cultural attractions.

Trails along the Arrow River and in the surrounding area

The Arrow River Bridges Trail starts in Arrowtown near the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement and follows the willow-lined Arrow River. In summer, there are swimming and picnic spots. The Queenstown Trail covers a wider area: the network includes more than 150 kilometres of off-road trails from Queenstown to Gibbston via historic Arrowtown. The status of individual sections may change, so check current trail information before setting out.

For a route with a substantial climb, the Bush Creek Track leads from the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement to the town’s historic water intake. The track climbs steeply through beech forest and open grassland to a saddle with views over the Whakatipu Basin. Sawpit Gully, by contrast, is described as a 7-kilometre loop. Its features include steep ascents and descents, a section involving rock scrambling in a stream, and a route high above the Arrow River. These details bring the differences between the trails into focus: one centres on a steep climb and a scenic saddle, while the other is a longer loop with steep sections and a rocky stream crossing.

The options described range from historic buildings and exhibitions to summer activities by the river and more challenging trail features. This makes it easy to choose a focus for your trip without treating any one walk as representative of the whole town.
