A short walk by a dune lake, a view of Lake Horowhenua and a full-size windmill: discoveries in Horowhenua District range from nature watching to culture and technology. Wetlands, native forest and coastal settlements create diverse landscapes, while museums, collections and recreational activities each offer their own focus. The district is shaped not only by its natural environment, but also by the stories and activities that define its individual places.
Wetlands, forest and birdlife
At Papaitonga Scenic Reserve, a short, easy track loops around a dune lake, offering views and opportunities for birdwatching. The reserve is also an important refuge for birds that depend on wetlands or lowland forests. Track conditions may change; check them before your visit. Muaūpoko Park offers views of Lake Horowhenua (Punahau) and has a playground.
Waiopehu Scenic Reserve has a different character: native forest, well-maintained walking tracks, birdlife and views of the Tararua Ranges shape the nature experience here. Follow local signage about pest-control measures. Near Foxton Beach lies the Manawatū River Estuary, a UNESCO-protected international wetland. It is known for its birdlife and migratory godwits; 95 bird species have been recorded there.
Foxton: Mills, history and collections
De Molen is a full-size windmill modelled on a 17th-century windmill. Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom offers other perspectives on local history, presenting Māori, Dutch and pioneer history through museums, a gallery, exhibitions, a library and a heritage centre. The Foxton Flax Strippers Museum houses the only working flax-stripping and scraping machines in the country. Visitor access and opening hours may change, so check visiting arrangements in advance.
Technical collections also offer a variety of highlights. The Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum houses one of New Zealand’s largest collections of steam engines and early industrial heritage. MAVtech in Foxton holds more than 100,000 recordings in various formats, as well as an estimated five million feet of film. These figures give an idea of the collection’s breadth, from different recording formats to film reels with a combined length of several million feet.
Coast, tracks and activities
Foxton Beach is the largest coastal community in Horowhenua. Foxton Beach Pump Track has circuits for beginners, intermediate riders and highly skilled riders. A range of coastal activities come together at Waitārere Beach: there is a swimming beach and good fishing, while the beach break offers left- and right-hand waves for surfing. Weather and swell affect surfing conditions, so check them before heading out. Waikawa Beach offers opportunities for kayaking.
There is a variety of activities inland, too. Levin Adventure Park has a flying fox, a rope course and a climbing wall. Shannon’s Toy Circus combines a toy and games museum with mini golf, a skating rink, scooter facilities, BMX ramps and foam pits. Safe swimming is possible in the Ōhau River at Gladstone Reserve; check water conditions and local safety advice before swimming. Walking tracks from the reserve lead to the Te Araroa walkway. The western approach to the Tararua Northern Crossing from Levin is via Tararua Road and Gladstone Road.
Tastings and cooking classes
Ōhau Wines offers small-group cellar-door tastings, as well as private tasting parties for groups of six or more. Tasting arrangements and seasonal opening hours may change; check the details in advance. Private cooking classes for groups of 15 or more can be booked at the Old Courthouse Eatery in Levin. The culinary offerings range from an intimate wine tasting to a cooking class for a larger group.
