Ōhope offers a strong coastal connection, but there is more to it than a walk along the beach: local attractions include walks of varying lengths, a scenic reserve and activities on the water. The details help you compare the different types of outings by time required and interest.
Beach, Harbour and Views
Ōhope Beach is an 11 km-long, easy-to-walk white sand beach that stretches from the entrance to Ōhiwa Harbour to West End. From Ōhope Beach, you can see Whale Island, White Island and the far-reaching coastline of the East Cape. Here, a specific stretch of beach meets expansive views of islands and coastline.
Port Ōhope Wharf is at the eastern end of Ōhope, beside Ōhiwa Harbour; it is mainly a recreational fishing wharf. Ōhiwa Harbour is considered the southern half of Ōhope and offers opportunities to take in the surroundings, walk, fish and kayak. Recreational fishing is the main activity at the wharf, while the harbour also offers walks, fishing and kayaking.
Walks and Reserve
The two walks differ in length and format. The section of the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi Walkway from the western end of Ōhope Beach to Ōhope Scenic Reserve is an easy 30-minute walk. The Fairbrother Loop Walk is a self-guided circuit in Ōhope Scenic Reserve and takes about an hour. This gives you the choice of a half-hour section of the walkway or a circuit taking about an hour.
Check current track conditions before your walk. Dogs are not allowed on the Fairbrother Loop Walk to protect wildlife, including kiwi; also check the current rules before your visit. A traditionally carved archway stands at the entrance to Ōhope Scenic Reserve.
Activities on the Water and on Land
At the western end of Ōhope Beach, Salt Spray Surf School offers surf lessons with qualified local instructors for individuals and groups. Confirm lesson availability in advance. Takutai Adventure offers e-bike and SUP board hire in Ōhope; also check equipment availability before making plans.
Ōhope Beach Golf Links is located between the Pacific Ocean and Ōhiwa Harbour. Ohiwa Fishing Charters departs by boat, “The Cougar,” from Ōhope Wharf for fishing trips; confirm departure arrangements in advance.
