Athenree brings together a range of features: natural mineral pools with different temperature zones and a local history that spans the Homesteadâs design and traces of settlement at Athenree PÄ.
The Mineral Pools at Athenree Hot Springs
Athenree Hot Springs has two natural mineral pools. The larger pool is 33 to 35°C, has an average depth of 1.3 metres and includes a shallow area for toddlers. The smaller relaxation pool for adults is considerably warmer, at 38.5 to 40°C; children are not permitted there. The separate temperature zones and the access rule for the smaller pool are important differences to consider when planning a visit.
The pools are fed by an underground aquifer 250 metres deep. Mineral water is continuously pumped through them, and the pool volume is renewed every three to four hours. This distinguishes the water source from the ongoing renewal of the pool volume.
Berg bicycles are available to hire and kayaks can be used at Athenree Hot Springs & Holiday Park. Ask at reception about the arrangements; availability depends on them.
Homestead Gardens and PÄ History
During the period from the Stewartsâ arrival until their departure, Adela Stewart transformed the grounds of Athenree Homestead from a bare area into an estate with extensive exotic orchards, vegetable gardens that supplied the community, and flower gardens considered exemplary. These gardens are part of the estateâs historical development; the description refers to the design at the time, not its present-day condition.
A pictorial history of the house is on display for visitors in the entrance area of Athenree Homestead. The presentation may change. It provides another historical point of interest alongside the development of the grounds.
Athenree PÄ is classified as a Category 2 Historic Place. The site is privately owned and not open to the public. It is considered the oldest pÄ in the Athenree district and the site there that has been settled most often. Cultural remains approximately 500 years old have been found at the site; after its fortifications were built, it was settled at least three times. The historical details and access restriction are equally important to understanding the site.
Jetty and Walks Nearby
The new Athenree Jetty is on Athenree Esplanade behind 12 Roretana Drive, replacing the former, outdated jetty. The project is complete.
Athenree Wetland is on Steele Road between Athenree and Waihi Beach, beside the Waiau River. The Athenree Wetland Loop is a 20-minute circuit walk; access is from Emmerton-Steele Road between the two places. Check track conditions before setting out.
Dogs, camping and lighting fires are not permitted in the Athenree Wetland Wildlife Refuge Reserve. These rules apply to the reserve and should be considered when planning your visit.
In the Waihi BeachâAthenree Estuary area, horses may be led or ridden along a signposted circuit from the second Thursday in February to the third Wednesday in December. The route runs from Albacore Avenue via Pio Road and the Athenree Estuary to the existing shared walking and cycling path at Island View. Horses are not permitted in the dunes; confirm the current rules before riding.
