Omokoroa brings together coastal scenery, trails across the peninsula and visible traces of its history. Ōmokoroa Domain offers harbour access and public facilities; independent loop walks, a cycle trail to Tauranga City and historic sites also shape a stay here. Those considering Omokoroa as a destination will find a range of highlights—from a waterside walk to archaeology.

Water access and facilities at the Domain

ĹŚmokoroa Domain offers access to the harbour. PĹŤhutukawa trees provide shade, and there are also picnic tables, public toilets and a playground. A free gas barbecue is available at the northern end, while access to the kai is at the southern end. Arrangements at the Domain may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Loop walks and cycling

The Peninsula Loop is about nine kilometres long. It passes ĹŚmokoroa Golf Club and Cooney Reserve, then follows the water back to the Domain. When planning your day, you can treat the full route as a walk in its own right.

The Omokoroa Bird Walk goes around the peninsula and features ten informative panels about birds that can be seen there or nearby. The panels give the walk a clear birdwatching focus. As their availability may change, check the latest information in advance.

The Peninsula Loop combines its roughly nine-kilometre route with a return leg along the water; the Bird Walk focuses on birds and its ten panels. The two walks therefore differ both in their stated routes and in their subject matter.

The Omokoroa to Tauranga Cycle Trail is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail network and provides a safe, relaxing connection between the peninsula and Tauranga City. This gives you a dedicated cycling connection to a named destination, in addition to the walking trails. Route conditions may change; check them before your ride. The award-winning Omokoroa Skatepath is also located at Western Ave Sportsground. Its condition and award status may change.

Coastal scenery and historic traces

Gerald Crapp Historic Reserve is a coastal strip around the headland of Omokoroa Point. Wai-Huri Pa is a significant archaeological site in Gerald Crapp Reserve; its deep ditch is still visible. A tree stump in Gerald Crapp Historic Reserve was also carved by Warwich Lilley of Rotorua as a likeness of Reverend Joseph Tice Gellibrand. Omokoroa’s historical connections are thus evident both in an archaeological site and in a carved depiction.

The shoreline at Hamurana Reserve

Hamurana Reserve has picnic tables and trees that provide shade. Its shoreline consists of large rocks rather than sand; the rocks are part of the work to secure the shoreline protection. From there, a short path with a few steps leads down to the water. The shoreline and access give this place a different character from a sandy beach.
