Onetangi offers several clearly distinct options to consider when planning your visit: walking tracks start at Onetangi Beach, a coastal walk connects the area with Palm Beach, and historic sites add to the choice. Depending on what you want to focus on during your stay, you can choose between different track profiles, coastal views, a longer walking route and cultural history. A bus route is also described, including its starting point, intermediate locations and ferry terminal. You can weigh these themes separately: choose one route based on its surfaces and steps, another for its coastal views, or focus on history in and around Onetangi.

Walking tracks with different highlights

The Onetangi Suburban Ramble begins at the eastern end of Onetangi Beach. It combines easy walks along sandy beaches, quiet residential streets, and gravel roads and paths; it also includes several staircases. The route is therefore not defined by the beach alone: residential streets and gravel paths are also part of its profile. Even though the paths are easy, several staircases are included along the route. If you are choosing based on the surface, you can take this mix of terrain and steps into account.

A coastal walk connects Onetangi with Palm Beach and offers views of the sea and surrounding landscape. Unlike the Suburban Ramble, whose profile includes different surfaces and staircases, this walk focuses on the connection to Palm Beach and the views. The two walks therefore differ in their specifically stated features: one combines different types of paths, while the other connects Onetangi with Palm Beach and offers views of the sea and landscape.

The track to Man O’ War Bay also starts at Onetangi Beach and is part of Te Ara Hura. This walking adventure runs around Waiheke Island and is 100 km long in total. The 100 km refers to Te Ara Hura as a whole, not to the individual section from Onetangi Beach to Man O’ War Bay. The beach is therefore both the starting point for this section of the island route and the starting point of the Onetangi Suburban Ramble, which follows a route with different features.

Historic sites in and around Onetangi

The Waiheke Island Historic Village is located in Onetangi and includes the Woolshed Museum and three adjoining cottages. The Stony Batter Historic Reserve is also located in the Onetangi area, with gun emplacements and other striking remnants from the Second World War. The two sites have different historical focuses: the Village includes a museum and cottages, while Stony Batter is associated with military remains. They are also in different locations: the Historic Village is in Onetangi, while the reserve is in the surrounding area. If you would like to include cultural history in your stay, you can take their locations and individual focuses into account.

By bus to the ferry terminal

Bus route 50A runs from Onetangi’s Seventh Avenue via Ostend, Surfdale and Oneroa to the Matiatia ferry terminal. This gives you a bus route from Onetangi to the terminal via three named intermediate locations. If Matiatia is part of your arrival or departure plans, you can include this connection in your planning. The timetable is valid from 25 October 2024; check current services before travelling.
