Lagoon islands, horseback riding and an event celebrating agricultural traditions offer different reasons to visit Paita. There are also riverside walks, a zipline near Mont Mou and a ceramics studio. When choosing accommodation in Paita, it helps to first decide what to focus on: islands and beaches, land-based activities or a visit for the Fête du Bœuf.

Lagoon Islands and Beaches near Paita

Îlot M'Bo is in the Paita lagoon. Its varied underwater landscapes are ideal for snorkelling. Îlot Ange has a white-sand beach and areas for swimming and snorkelling. Fine sand, a surrounding reef and turquoise water define the island scenery of Îlot M’Bé Kouen. The three destinations are distinguished by these individual natural features: the underwater landscape at M'Bo, the beach and swimming area at Ange, and the sandy island and reef at M’Bé Kouen.

You can contact local water taxis for trips to Îlot M'Bo, Îlot Ange and Îlot M’Bé Kouen. Transport arrangements may change, so confirm your plans with the operators in advance.

South of Paita lies Baie de Toro, a beach with an area equipped for picnics. The wreck of the German cargo ship Mélanesia is also in the bay. The ship was launched in 1955 and has been lying off the coast of New Caledonia since 1981. The beach and wreck offer two different reasons to visit Baie de Toro: an equipped picnic area and a striking feature of the coastal landscape.

Fête du Bœuf and Local Cuisine

Paita’s Fête du Bœuf is a recurring event celebrating agricultural traditions. Since 1994, the festival has brought visitors together and celebrated local agricultural expertise. The 28th edition is scheduled for 18 October 2026. Its programme includes a barbecue competition, spit-roasted veal, a wide range of food available on site and a tasting of animelles. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the date and programme before you travel.

Regional produce also features at Karikaté Beach – La Table d'Hôte: the menu includes honey, mandarins, fresh eggs and other produce from the farm. Groups of ten or more can arrange a bespoke brunch or meal there by booking in advance. Occasions mentioned include birthdays, team-building and get-togethers. This group offer is another way to include local cuisine in your travel plans.

Horseback Riding, Riding Lessons and Ceramics

The Centre équestre de Païta offers horseback rides for families and friends. It also offers riding lessons, as well as beginner and advanced courses. You can choose between a ride and a course, depending on the kind of riding experience you are looking for. The Ranch Railway Station also offers horseback rides and is located in the centre of Paita.

Those interested in crafts can take pottery and ceramics classes at Atelier Né d'argile in Paita. Contact the studio directly for current course arrangements. Classes and horseback rides cater to different interests, so you can consider them separately when choosing activities for your trip.

Ziplining and Walks in the Tontouta Valley

Near Mont Mou in Paita, La Belle Verte Canopy Tours offers a zipline course approximately 1.2 kilometres long, with four stages. This is followed by a walk of around 600 metres through the forest. Both sections are part of the experience, but involve different ways of getting around. A reservation is required; a shuttle from Nouméa can also be booked. Picnics are allowed on site. As operational details may change, confirm your booking and shuttle directly in advance.

Walks along the river are possible in the Tontouta Valley. More active visitors can head from there to the Mont Humboldt massif, the second-highest mountain in New Caledonia. These options offer two different ways to choose an activity: a riverside walk or access to the mountain massif for more active visitors.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

In Paita, you can plan your trip around the lagoon, the coast, horseback riding, crafts or the Fête du Bœuf. The activities described offer different experiences; you do not have to let a single outing define your entire stay. First consider which experiences matter most to you, then choose accommodation in Paita as part of your travel planning. If you are visiting for the Fête du Bœuf, the event date is particularly important; for trips to the islands, make sure to plan your contact with the water taxis.
