Poindimie combines a viewpoint overlooking the village with insights into local culture, activities on the river and reef, and a market in the town centre. The options have different focuses: views and a place to rest, a tour covering several topics, diving or canoeing, and a morning market visit. This lets you decide which aspects matter most for your stay: nature, cultural insights, water activities or the market.
Views, River and Waterfall
The Sentier Koyaboa leads to a viewpoint at the parabolic antenna overlooking the village. Near Poindimie, the Napoémien River has spots where you can stop for a refreshing break. The two options offer different experiences: the Sentier focuses on a viewpoint, while the Napoémien offers a break by the water.
The Cascade de Saint-Thomas lies on the GR Nord and can be reached from the centre of Poindimié with about a 30-minute drive followed by roughly a 30-minute walk. When planning, allow for both sections in sequence; the times are approximate and may vary.
Guided Tour and Local Topics
On a guided tour in the Tribu de Napoémien, you can learn about topics from several fields: medicinal plants and botany, preparing bougna, the tribe’s history, the boundaries of the reserves, and petroglyphs, or rock carvings. The tour thus combines knowledge of nature, food culture and history. Check current availability with the provider.
Diving, Canoeing and a Break at the Beach
From Poindimie, you can head out with an experienced diving instructor to a dive site on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed barrier reef and dive there. Check which providers are currently operating before your trip. On the Amoa River, you can go canoeing or kayaking, either independently or with a local guide. Confirm the current arrangements for canoe trips before your trip.
These two activities differ in the level of guidance: for diving, you go with an experienced diving instructor, while the canoe trip can be done independently or with a local guide. There are picnic areas at Plage de Tiéti, near Hôtel le Tieti. So, as well as water activities, picnic areas offer another option to focus on.
Market and Timing
The Marché de Poindimié takes place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings in the town centre. Plan your visit for one of these mornings and check the schedule before you go.
For planning your day, the market and the Cascade have different timing considerations: the market takes place on three specific mornings, while visiting the waterfall requires a drive followed by a walk. Check the market day before you go; the times given for the Cascade are approximate and may vary.
