The Verdronken Zwarte Polder nature reserve is near Nieuwvliet, at the mouth of the Westerschelde in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, creeks and beach shape the landscape, which is also home to a wide variety of plants and animals. This makes the coast a particular focus of a stay in Nieuwvliet, while the village church and mill offer another perspective on the place.

Walking routes between polder and coast

The nature reserve has a 2.5-kilometre walking path and a bridle path. The walking path starts at several points along the Zeedijk. This makes it easy to gauge the distance when planning; those who prefer to travel on horseback will also find a dedicated bridle path in the same nature reserve.

A longer coastal walk is the “Land and Water near Nieuwvliet” route: it is 8.6 kilometres long and passes through polder, a saline nature reserve, beach, sea and dunes. Longer sections cross salt marshes and mudflats on wooden boardwalks. Songbirds can be heard in the shrubs along the sandy path. The route therefore connects different landscapes and trail experiences in a single walk.

The difference in length is a practical point of reference when choosing between the two routes: the path in the nature reserve is 2.5 kilometres long, while the coastal walk is 8.6 kilometres. Those planning a shorter walk can use the first distance as a guide; the longer route passes through several distinct coastal landscapes.

In the Baanstpolder, an unpaved path runs through newly formed nature and directly alongside a watercourse. Here, the surface and proximity to the water define the character of the path.

Fossil shark teeth are also regularly found along a coastal route near Nieuwvliet. In Nieuwvliet-Bad, the wide beach is popular with families. At low tide, many shallow pools form there, making them suitable for small children.

Village history and historic buildings

Nieuwvliet grew out of the three historic lordships of Nieuwvliet, Mettenije and Sint-Pieter. Those who want to combine the landscape with local history will find two distinct landmarks in the village: the church and a grain mill.

The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk is the oldest building in the village and a Rijksmonument. It includes a small hall church dating from 1658. The church is therefore not only a historic building but also a tangible link to the history of the village.

The grain mill in Nieuwvliet has no name of its own. It is a round, stone, ground-level Dutch windmill dating from 1850. Volunteer millers still grind grain there today; freshly milled organic whole-wheat flour and spelt are also sold. The mill thus combines a historic architectural form with a craft that is still practised.

Mountain biking through the border region

For a mountain bike ride, the red loop of the “Grensstreek” route is a good option. It is 35 kilometres long, 52 percent of it on unpaved paths, and runs through Cadzand and Retranchement, as well as partly through Belgium. This route is clearly different from the shorter and longer walking routes around Nieuwvliet: the focus here is on mountain biking and crossing the border.

The mountain bike route starts at Boerenhoeve Nieuwvliet. For mountain bikers, Boerenhoeve offers parking, a workshop, a bike-wash facility and showers. The starting point and listed facilities give cyclists practical details for planning, while keeping the walking paths separate from this route.

You can choose what to focus on in Nieuwvliet: a shorter walk in the nature reserve, the longer coastal route, a mountain bike outing, or the history of the village church and mill. The details about each route and location offer different points of reference without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
