Lamswaarde offers several different ways to shape a stay, from architectural heritage to a landscape of dikes. The Theresiagesticht brings together a monastery, kindergarten and garden wall; the Baudeloodijk runs through a flower-filled landscape and has a long history as a sea dike. There is also a Marian chapel, art at the village entrance and various viewpoints. This means you can discover the village through both its local history and its paths and landscape.
Local History and Architectural Heritage
The Theresiagesticht was built in 1925–1926 in the interwar style. The complex comprises a monastery, a kindergarten and a garden wall. All three elements have cultural and historical value, as do their good state of preservation and detailed design. The relationship between the elements as a single complex is also valuable. Those interested in architectural heritage will find an ensemble here whose significance is not limited to the monastery alone.
A much earlier point of reference is Oud-Lamswaarde. By 1240, a village or an outlying farmstead known as a Uthof already existed under this name. This classification leaves both possibilities open. The early name broadens the historical perspective on the village far beyond the period when the Theresiagesticht was built: a reference dating from 1240 and a 20th-century building complex stand side by side here.
Another feature of the village is the corten steel artwork at the entrance from the direction of Kuitaart. Its cutouts depict lambs and windows of a house. Its location, material and motifs distinguish the artwork from the architecture of the Theresiagesticht. It makes its own statement and offers another way to discover Lamswaarde, this time through public art.
Baudeloodijk, Walking Route and Views
The Lamswaarde walking route follows the flower-filled Baudeloodijk, which served as a sea dike for a long time. Two different aspects come together along this path: the route’s landscape and the dike’s former function. The Baudeloodijk can therefore be considered both as part of a walking route and in connection with its historical role.
At the weel (small lake) along the Baudeloodijk, you can sit and look at the silhouette of Lamswaarde. From Lamswaarde, you can also enjoy a fine view of large seagoing ships sailing to Antwerp and seeming to travel over the dike. The views offer different points of interest: at the weel, the outline of the village takes centre stage, while the ships stand out for their size and the unusual impression they create above the dike.
Next to the Baudeloodijk is a Marian chapel built by volunteers in 1992. The walking route starts at Restaurant State and follows a church path, known as a Kerkenpaadje. As the stated starting point may change when routes are updated, check the latest route information before setting out. This helps distinguish the general description of the landscape from the practical information about the route’s starting point when planning your visit.
There is a children’s farm at the Petrus & Paulushoeve. This is another specific place in Lamswaarde, alongside its architectural heritage, local history and dike landscape.
