The Hollandsche IJssel runs through Zuidplas; the Rotte also flows through a peatland area of the region. The Ringvaart reveals another side of the water landscape: this waterway, enclosed by peat dikes, receives water from several polder pumping stations. Rivers, polders and water management are distinct but closely connected themes here.
Between Waterways and Nature
The GroenBlauwe Zone is located in the municipality of Zuidplas, directly borders Westergouwe in the municipality of Gouda, and covers about 45 hectares. It was created as a nature and recreation area and is being developed in stages. About 55 percent of the area is accessible via walking and cycling paths and boardwalks. As access may change during the work, check local notices before your visit.
Walking can also be considered on different scales: Zuidplas is part of the Hof van Delfland walking network, which comprises 900 kilometres of walking trails in total. In Hitland Park, activities include walking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, canoeing, horse riding, skating, playing and golf. You can identify the signposted 5-km route by its green signs marked “5KM”; you can join the route at any point. Before setting off, check for temporary diversions.
If you would like to include golf, Golfbaan Hitland has an 18-hole golf course. Check operating and booking arrangements separately. The park offers a range of activities, while the 5-km route stands out as a specific option for a walk.
Cycling by Route Length
Several cycling routes in Zuidplas pass historic monuments and scenic locations, among other places. Three named routes can be distinguished by their length: the Zevenhuizen–Moerkapelle–Zevenhuizerplas–Zevenhuizen route is 23 kilometres long. The Nieuwerkerk (Hitland)–Moordrecht–Zuidplaspolder–Nieuwerkerk route covers 31 kilometres. The Moordrecht–Moerkapelle–Zevenhuizerplas–Nieuwerkerk–Moordrecht route is listed as 37 kilometres long. These lengths provide a concrete comparison of distances, but do not indicate walking or cycling times. Trail conditions and signage may change.
Mills, Peatland and Traces of History
In the Tweemanspolder in Zevenhuizen stand four mills connected in a row, known as the Molenviergang. Together, they regulated the polder’s water level for almost two centuries. Their number, connection and former purpose make the group a clear example of regional water management. Another historical trace can be found on the edge of Hitland-Noord below the IJsseldijk: one of the brick and roof-tile works established along the Hollandsche IJssel in the 19th century stood there.
The Koornmolengat offers a different scene: a peaty area with carr woodland, distinctive flora, waterbirds and nesting cormorants. The area is protected and can only be visited as part of a guided tour; confirm the current date in advance. Birdlife is part of the habitat, but sightings may vary. The Stinzentuin Moordrecht is also located near the Hollandsche IJssel, next to the former orphanage.
Historic ships can also be found in Werkhaven Hitland on the Hollandsche IJssel; most date from around 1900. Access to the harbour and ships may vary. Together with the former brickworks and the Molenviergang, these places show different chapters in the history of life by and with the water.
Experience Zuidplas from the Water
The Tour de Zuidplas travels across the water and is divided into five narrative stages. It offers a view of Zuidplas from its waterways. Before setting off, check which water access points are suitable for your planned stage. As a further contrast to the nature and cultural attractions, the Willem-Alexander Baan meets the international requirements of the World Rowing Federation.
