Voorschoten is a green village between The Hague, Leiden and Wassenaar. Its landscape includes polders with meadows, dunes, woodland, landscape and urban parks, waterways and peat lakes. These landscape features can be explored on foot or by bicycle. When planning your stay, you can choose from local history, events and routes with a range of themes and lengths.

Village History and Culture

The Voorschoten tourist information office (VVV) is located in the historic heart of the village, on Voorstraat, inside Museum Voorschoten. The museum preserves, collects and documents the village’s past and more recent history. Its collection includes historical materials on social history, church and religion, education and teaching, and fine art.

A guided tour of the old centre can be booked through the museum. It covers Voorstraat, Treubstraat, part of Schoolstraat and the first section of Molenlaan. As arrangements may change, check the current booking options before planning your visit.

Alongside church services, the village church (Dorpskerk) hosts cultural events, including concerts, theatre, cabaret and literary events. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check its date in advance.

The Voorschoten horse market (paardenmarkt) dates back to a fair known as the Freimarkt, which is more than 800 years old. Since 2017, the paardenmarkt has been part of the Voorschoten Horse Days (Paardendagen). Another historical perspective is offered by the Leiden–Voorschoten Silver Route (Zilverroute), whose central theme is the history of silver.

Routes by Theme and Length

The Bomen wandel-route centrum Voorschoten passes 50 notable trees that are visible from public roads. The route is 7.5 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The municipality has updated it, so details may change. Check the latest route information in advance.

The 10-kilometre route along the country estates can start at Voorschoten station or De Vink station. Another option is the Beleef Fietsroute, which is approximately 25 kilometres long. Van der Valk Voorschoten is one of two convenient starting points for this route.

The Prins Frederik Parkenroute runs through the present-day municipalities of Wassenaar and Voorschoten. So, as well as routes with specific lengths, you can choose routes that extend across municipal boundaries.

The distances given are useful for comparing route lengths: at 7.5 kilometres, the Bomenroute is shorter than the 10-kilometre country estate route, while the Beleef Fietsroute is longer, at approximately 25 kilometres. The routes also differ in focus: the Bomenroute centres on notable trees, while the country estate route and the Beleef Fietsroute offer their own options for choosing a route.

Market and Regional Options

The Friday market in Voorschoten offers fresh vegetables and fruit, cheese, nuts, meat, fish and chicken, as well as bread, fresh biscuits and Turkish specialities. If you plan to visit the market, check the date in advance, as schedules may change.
