Park Rusthoff lies in the centre of Sassenheim. The historic park is 200 years old and designated a municipal monument. Together with the expansive views and architectural history, it reveals different facets of the town. Sassenheim also has a railway station; local parking options offer another practical point of reference. When planning, you can take into account both your interests for your stay and the information on getting there and visiting times.
Parks, Blossoms and Views
Sassenheim is surrounded by expansive views that create a colourful display of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths in spring. A viewpoint in Sassenheim offers panoramic views over the Kagerplassen. The flower landscape and the view of the water offer different highlights: seasonal colours on the one hand, and the panorama on the other.
Nearby, the Landgoedwandelen Sassenheim walking route passes the remains of the medieval ring fortress of Teylingen. The same route also passes Het Oude Koningshuys. Sassenheim is recommended for cycling routes in connection with extensive flower fields, natural landscapes, the village and its historic heritage. When choosing your travel dates, you can consider the spring blossoms as a seasonal guide and check them against the specific dates of organised walks.
Churches and Architectural History
The Dorpskerk was built on a dune. A wooden chapel, probably an earlier one, was replaced in the 12th century by a Romanesque hall church made of tuff stone. The church and tower were rebuilt in 1594. Bricks were used, probably from the destroyed Teylingen Castle. The restoration work of 1972 brought the Dorpskerk closer to its original Romanesque tuff-stone chapel.
The Bollenschuur of Gebr. Bergman is also one of the named historic buildings: the building at Teijlingerlaan 69 is a national monument of the Netherlands. Built in 1846, the Molen van Speelman was once one of the largest mills in the Dutch coastal region.
Visiting Times and Practical Information
The Mariakapel at Sint-Pancratiuskerk is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00. The cemetery next to the church is open daily. If you plan to visit both places, note the different opening information: the chapel has specific days and hours, while the cemetery is listed as open daily.
There is free parking at Sassenheim railway station. Additional parking spaces and on-street parking are available in and near the centre. This lets you distinguish the parking option at the station from the other options mentioned in and near the centre.
Seasonal Dates and Activities
On the last Sundays in June, July and August, walks for silence and inspiration are held in Sassenheim along the local “pearls”. Check the dates and departure details before travelling. The Pancratiusfeest is celebrated in the parish community in late September or early October with a festive Eucharistic celebration and a special activity.
For seasonal planning, the spring blossoms and the scheduled Sundays for the walks provide different points of reference. The Molen van Speelman and the Dorpskerk, in turn, offer a look at historic buildings from different periods. This makes it possible to explore Sassenheim through its landscape, views, religious sites and architectural history without combining these themes into a fixed itinerary.
