Noordwijk-Binnen brings together medieval origins, the history of herb cultivation and gardens showcasing a variety of plants. Historic buildings, Streekmuseum Veldzicht and themed routes offer different ways to explore this part of Noordwijk. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to make the town centre, the museum gardens or a route the main focus of your stay.
Local history and notable buildings
The town centre of Noordwijk-Binnen has medieval origins. Noordwijk-Binnen also developed in connection with the rise of herb cultivation in the 16th century. The area around Voorstraat is designated as a protected townscape. These details describe different aspects of the place: its historical roots and the influence of herb cultivation on its development.
The Oude Jeroenskerk is the oldest and best-known building in Noordwijk-Binnen. The Gothic cruciform church is named after the martyr Jeroen. Visitors can climb its tower via a staircase with more than 100 steps; from the top, the view stretches across Noordwijk, the dunes and the sea. Check the opening arrangements before your visit if you plan to climb the tower.
Another historic building is the Weeshuispoortje, also known as the “Heilige Geest poortje”. It was built in 1618 as an entrance to an orphanage. The Schutterij Sint Jorisgilde is also part of the town’s cultural heritage: it is the oldest fully functioning marksmen’s guild in the Netherlands.
Herbs, flower bulbs and Museum Veldzicht
Streekmuseum Veldzicht is housed in a farm built by Jacobus Hoogeveen in 1864. Its main themes are flower bulbs, herbs and Blaarkop cattle. The museum grounds include two historic herb gardens, a flower and flower bulb garden, and a flower-picking garden.
The Historisch Kruidenveld is home to culinary herbs, forgotten vegetable varieties, edible flowers, and medicinal and dye plants. The Flora van Noordwijk garden showcases flower bulbs characteristic of the Bollenstreek. The gardens therefore highlight different aspects: the herb garden brings together plants with a range of uses, while Flora van Noordwijk focuses on the region’s flower bulbs.
The barn at Museum Veldzicht also offers educational activities. Demonstrations, workshops and a scavenger hunt explore the themes of food, textiles and rope-making. If you are interested in the history of herb cultivation, you can take the Heilzaam Noordwijk Route: it can start at the museum and includes an audio tour about herb cultivation in Noordwijk and the town’s development as a health resort.
Routes and countryside around Noordwijk-Binnen
The Historische wandeling Noordwijk Binnen is a 1.9-kilometre walking route. Check its course before setting out so you can plan according to the current route. By contrast, the Heilzaam Noordwijk Route is distinguished mainly by its audio tour about herb cultivation and the history of the health resort. This lets you choose between a route with a stated distance and a themed audio experience without treating them as the same route.
Visitors walking the Wandelroute Veldzicht can take a break at a rest stop on the grounds of Museum Veldzicht. Another feature of the landscape is Landgoed Calorama, where a winding walking path has been laid out along the dune ridge. If you plan to walk this path, check access before your visit.
The Coepelduynen, part of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen, lie near Noordwijk-Binnen. This protected natural area complements the town’s historical and gardening themes. Which of these aspects you focus on depends on whether you are mainly interested in architectural history, plants and cultivation, or a walk through the landscape.
