Explore Zevenhoven through nature watching, cycling and local history. The De Groene Jonker bird excursion starts in the village; the walking route has named starting and ending points, and the Zevenhoven Route is 30 kilometres long. Churches, a Lourdes grotto and a mill remnant add to the options.
Wetland landscape and birdwatching
The Groene Jonker is a water-rich nature area with a large expanse of water, reed beds and wet grasslands. Water levels change with the seasons: in winter, the water is higher and the landscape is wetter; in summer, the water level is lower and it is drier. The natural water level encourages young, vigorous reed growth. Moisture and reed growth therefore provide two specific clues for understanding the area’s character throughout the year.
The De Groene Jonker bird excursion lasts 2.5 to 3 hours and starts in Zevenhoven. Waterproof walking shoes or boots are recommended for the potentially wet route. The duration and footwear advice help with two different planning questions: how much time to allow for the excursion and what footwear is recommended.
Walking and cycling
The Groene Jonker walking route starts at the De Roerdomp car park at Hogedijk 2–10 and ends at Hogedijk 5 in Zevenhoven. These named endpoints give you specific guidance for the start and finish. Keep both addresses in mind when planning your walk.
For cycling, the Zevenhoven Route has a clear distance: it is 30 kilometres long. Walking and cycling therefore address different planning questions: the walking route has named start and end points, while the cycling route has a stated distance.
Churches, grotto and mill remnant
The church at Dorpsstraat 12 was built in two phases. Its oldest section dates from the early 19th century, and the tower from 1937.
Behind the Johannes Geboortekerk in Zevenhoven is a Lourdes grotto. It contains an almost life-size white replica of Our Lady of Lourdes, dating from 1913.
There is a historical assumption about the location of Zevenhoven’s first church: it is believed to have stood on the same site as the present Dutch Reformed Church at the intersection of Dorpsstraat and Stationsweg.
At Hogedijk 26, an elevated remnant of a mill stands in the Zevenhoven polder. The mill remnant is connected with water management in the polder.
Village market and coffee room
The village market takes place every Saturday morning on a small scale on Jonge Zevenhovenseweg in Zevenhoven. Locally made products are offered there. As the schedule may change, it is advisable to check the date before visiting.
De Landkruidenier in Zevenhoven has a coffee room with indoor and outdoor seating. Coffee, soft drinks, farm-made ice cream and homemade cake are offered.
