Bleiswijk combines natural areas and recreational spaces with a historic village character. Bleiswijkse Zoom offers walking and cycling paths, a beach, swimming facilities and a sunbathing lawn; historic buildings in the old village centre offer a glimpse into the village’s past. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bleiswijk, these different highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your travel interests.

Nature and recreation around Bleiswijk

Bleiswijkse Zoom lies on the eastern side of Bleiswijk. The area is part of Rottemeren and serves as a recreational area and day-camping site. Walking and cycling paths complement the beach, swimming facilities and sunbathing lawn. This means Zoom combines paths through green surroundings with opportunities to spend time by the water. The wet nature trail “Laarzenpad” is also located in the southern part of the area.

Rottemeren is also a distinctive landscape, characterised by rugged hills, park-like woods, abundant nature, open space and water. An increasing number of bird species can be found there. North of Bleiswijk, Bleiswijkse Fles forms a green link between Zoetermeer and Rottemeren. For cyclists, the “Rondje Bleiswijkse Zoom” route takes in both Bleiswijkse Zoom and Bleiswijkse Fles. The area therefore offers several different natural attractions: the recreational facilities and paths of Zoom, the landscape of Rottemeren and the green link provided by Fles.

Village history and historic buildings

Bleiswijk’s old village centre comprises Dorpsstraat, Hoekeindseweg, Kerkstraat and Hoefweg. At Dorpsstraat 5 stand protected espalier lime trees that are almost 200 years old and once stood in front of the “Snippenrust” country estate. At the intersection of Hoekeindseweg and the later-built Lijsterlaan stands the “Hoop Vleit de Landman” farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century. The streets, trees and buildings offer different ways to appreciate the village’s historical development.

The “Nederlands Hervormde Kerk” is a single-nave village church dating from the first half of the 16th century. Its choir has a five-sided end. “Single-nave” describes a church space with one main nave; the five-sided choir end describes the shape of the choir’s termination. Notable 17th-century furnishings include an oak pulpit dating from 1622 and an oak baptismal screen. The church thus offers a chance to appreciate both its architectural form and its historic furnishings.

The history of water management is also part of the village’s story. Bleiswijkse Verlaat is a lock dating from around 1774, which was fully restored in 2015. The surviving remains of octagonal water mill No. 1 of the “A” section of the Bleiswijkse droogmakerij date from 1772. The mill was partly dismantled in 1915; the surviving remains are fitted with an inclined paddle wheel. The lock and mill add the village’s technical history to the story told by the church and farmhouse.

The historic village walk “Dorpswandeling Bleiswijk” was put together by the Oudheidkundige Vereniging en Museum Bleiswijk. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between two different interests: nature and recreation at Bleiswijkse Zoom, or the historic village character, with its church, streets and technical buildings. This can help you match your choice of hotel in Bleiswijk to the focus of your trip.
