In the Stormpoldervloedbos, tidal channels fill and empty twice a day with the ebb and flow of the tide. The 9-hectare nature reserve lies beyond the dike in the Nieuwe Maas near Krimpen aan den IJssel. The changing tide shapes the landscape and can affect access. Kingfishers, green and great spotted woodpeckers, various species of geese and ducks, and birds of prey can be found in the area; which birds you see also depends on the season.

Nature trails and open landscapes

The Heemtuin Krimpen covers two hectares. Its landscape features include blue moor-grass meadows, marsh marigold meadows, an orchid field, an alder carr and a dike lined with pollarded willows. A circular walk of less than one kilometre leads through characteristic landscapes of the Krimpenerwaard. It is therefore shorter than the 1.1-kilometre “Groen voor iedereen” route in the nearby Krimpenerhout. This route is suitable for people using a walking frame, wheelchair or other assistance; check the path conditions and accessibility on site.

Krimpenerhout lies south of the town centre, near the N210. The recreational area includes woodland, wetland zones and ponds, and is crossed by paths for pedestrians and cyclists. North of the N210 are the smaller wooded areas of Lansing Zuid and EZH Bos. The surrounding area offers opportunities for swimming, surfing and sport fishing; on the east side there is a separate dog beach and a water playground. Check current water quality advisories before swimming.

The historical walk in Lansingh-Zuid consists of three short walks of about two kilometres each and is described as a combined 6-kilometre route. It is considered easy to navigate, even with a wheelchair or pushchair. Weather and maintenance can affect accessibility, so it is worth checking local trail conditions. A nature reserve along the route comes close in some respects to the state of the landscape up to around the 11th century, before the Krimpenerwaard was reclaimed. Ditches and waterways were used to regulate water levels. The surviving Lansing-Kade is an old boundary between two polders.

Shipyard history and regional culture

The Scheepswerf Van Duijvendijk complex on the IJsseldijk in Krimpen aan den IJssel consists of a residence and two wooden sheds. A shipyard is documented at this location as early as 1622. The complex has cultural and historical value as a rare surviving example of an industry once widespread along the major rivers. The shipyard’s history thus connects the development of river-based industry with a specific place.

The Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard is housed in a monumental 17th-century “Hallehuis”-style farmhouse. The museum’s regional themes include inland shipping, brickworks and rope-making; it also has an old “Ot en Sien” classroom. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit. The grounds and museum are open for cultural gatherings, educational programmes, celebrations and workshops; programmes vary by season.

Kinderboerderij Klein Boveneind also combines leisure with nature and environmental education. Visitors can learn about farm animals, nature and the environment; there is also an education centre for nature and environmental lessons. Programmes may vary.
