Kaag is located in the Kagerplassen water sports area. If you are considering a stay here, you can focus on boating options, signposted routes or village history. The range extends from a ferry and boat rental to several routes of different lengths; the church and museum offer further points of interest in the area’s cultural history.

Water and getting here

The Kaag ferry runs between Kaag and Buitenkaag and operates around the clock. If you are planning your journey around it, check the operator’s information before setting out. Botenverhuur Hoogenboom Kaag rents out, among other things, sloops, sailboats and motorboats on Kaag. The rental offer may change, so check in advance which types of boat are available. The Fluisterboot KaagErvaaring is designed for guests with disabilities; wheelchairs can be brought on board and taken off again without difficulty.

Routes by length and accessibility

The 5 km Familie Wandelpad Kaag runs through Buitenkaag and the picturesque island of Kaag. It follows paved paths and is accessible to strollers, mobility scooters, rollators and wheelchairs. Stops along the route include a water play feature, a birdwatching wall and an observation tower. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider not only its length but also the path surface and the listed stops.

For a shorter loop, Kaag Toen & Nu is a different option: the circular route on Julianalaan is less than 2 km long, can be explored on foot or by bicycle, and features audio stories about the island. Groene Lusjes: Kaag is a 3.3 km walking route starting at Julianalaan 13a. The Kaag Historisch Actief walking route is 6 km long and starts at the Kaag ferry. The lengths and starting points give you specific points of comparison, without requiring you to combine one route with another.

Birdwatching and landscape

There is a birdwatching point at the end of Irenelaan. The five bird species most frequently mentioned there are the black-tailed godwit, northern shoveler, northern lapwing, black-tailed godwit and Eurasian oystercatcher. Near Kaag, Lakerpolder is accessible year-round on the designated route, between sunrise and sunset. As access rules may change, check the latest information before your visit.

One seasonal restriction applies to the Laarzenpad Kaag: it is inaccessible during the breeding season, from 15 March to 15 July. If you plan to take this route, take the dates into account and check the local information.

Church, name and museum

The Protestantse Kerk te Kaag is a late Victorian hall church with a centrally positioned pulpit. It is a Rijksmonument. Its interior furnishings include copper reading desks, a holder for a baptismal font and two copper chandeliers from the 18th century. Kaag is probably the oldest village centre in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. The origin of the name should also be understood with caution: Kaag probably derives from the word “kaghe”, meaning land outside the dikes; the word is documented as early as 1308.

De Kaagse Boer combines a farm and a cheese dairy. The Kaasmuseum of De Kaagse Boer is located on Kaageiland: it is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from April to October, and by appointment outside this season. Confirm the opening hours before your visit.
