In Gouda, the city’s history comes alive through its flavors: At the cheese market, the traditional handclapping between traders, horse-drawn cheese carts and cheese being weighed on the original scales of the Goudse Waag are all part of the scene. The market is a seasonal tradition; check the dates before planning your visit. The stalls offer regional products, and a craft market takes place alongside them. The selection may vary by season.

Cheese, syrup waffles and market traditions

The Gouda Cheese Experience explores the history, production and trade of Gouda cheese through interactive activities and tastings. For a different glimpse of local food culture, visit the Kamphuisen Siroopwafelfabriek: On a tour, you can watch demonstrations of how syrup waffles are made, taste syrup and finish with a fresh, warm waffle. Tour formats and availability may change; check which dates are offered before making plans. This gives you a taste of two different sides of Gouda’s specialties: cheese as a product with a history of trade, and the syrup waffle in the making.

Canals, harbor and ways to explore the water

Museumhaven Gouda brings together historic commercial vessels with Werfhuijs and IJsselhuis. The grounds are free to enter and open at all times. The ships themselves cannot be visited because they are inhabited. The harbor has three self-guided experience routes that can be explored around the clock, including a 60-minute Museumhaven walk. As the routes may change, it is worth checking the current options before your visit.

There are also different ways to experience Gouda on the water: JabaSup offers SUP and canoe tours through the historic canals. Reederij de IJsel runs seasonal trips through the monumental city center aboard the trekschuiten Jan Salie or Jan Kordaat; check operating times before setting out. The historic waterways in the city center have a total of 200 moorings. The harbor, a walk and a boat trip each offer a different perspective on the waterways.

City history and architecture

Gouda has almost 1,250 protected monuments, including almost 900 municipal monuments and about 350 national monuments. The Goudse Waag is a landmark of the city’s trading history: Pieter Post designed the building in 1668, and its original scales can be seen inside. Museum de Goudse Waag explores the history of the city, its trade and the products that were weighed and traded there.

At Museum Gouda, city history and art come together. The museum preserves a unique collection of 16th-century altarpieces that survived the iconoclasm. A digital journey through time is based on a detailed model of Gouda from 1562. For children, the museum offers a tablet tour, a life-size city model and an activity in the studio; the program may change.

Gouda’s cultural heritage also includes the 72 stained-glass windows by the Crabeth brothers, known as the Goudse Glazen and considered unique in the world. Another way to discover hidden treasures is the free audio tour at Sint-Janskerk. It lasts about 40 minutes; visitor offerings may change. Depending on your interests, these visits offer insights into trading history, works of art or an independent exploration with audio.

Getting around by bike and train

Cycling routes from Gouda connect the historic city center with cheese farms, meadows and the polders of the Groene Hart. A 12-kilometer route runs from Gouda to Reeuwijk and the Reeuwijkse Plassen, and is also suitable for children. Along the way is Kinderboerderij De Goudse Hofsteden, which is free to visit.

For travel by train, Gouda station is easy to locate: It is a five-minute walk from the historic center and is an Intercity station with direct connections to destinations including Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. Check connections and timetables before traveling. At Nieuwe Markt, there is a public, covered and supervised bicycle parking facility with space for about 700 bikes; facility details may change.
