Dordrecht offers a range of experiences for a trip: the city’s history, museums and walks, as well as nature around the Biesbosch.
City History in Churches, Houses and Museums
Grote Kerk Dordrecht, also known as Grote of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, dates back to the 11th century. Huis Van Gijn focuses on everyday life around 1900: the museum shows how a wealthy couple and their staff lived and worked. It also includes interiors from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. These dates offer different historical perspectives on the house and its residents.
Hof van Nederland explores freedom in the Netherlands, past and present. The museum is housed in a former medieval monastery. Dordrechts Museum has a different focus: its collection of paintings spans the 16th to the 19th century. If you want to explore the historic city centre on foot, you can follow Rondje Dordt, a walking tour through this part of Dordrecht.
Nature Areas and Activities in the Biesbosch
South of the city lies Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch, a nature and recreation area of approximately 530 hectares. You can enjoy extensive cycling and hiking there. De Biesbosch National Park is known as Europe’s largest freshwater tidal area. Activities there are different: visitors can canoe through winding waterways or hike along rugged trails. The names therefore refer to different natural destinations and help you choose the activity you’re looking for.
Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht offers excursions and boat trips led by nature guides. Canoes, SUPs and whisper boats can also be rented there; check seasonal availability before your trip. An exhibition at the centre covers five themes of the Biesbosch area: water, plants, beavers, birds and history. Guided activities, rentals and a themed exhibition thus offer different ways to visit.
Craftsmanship and Getting There
Destilleerderij Rutte also gives Dordrecht a distinctive connection to craftsmanship. It still makes its gins and jenever by hand, using the method developed by its founder Simon Rutte in 1872. Rutte Jenever & Distilleerderij welcomes visitors to its atmospheric tasting room for tastings or workshops. If you’re planning a visit, check the booking details before your trip.
If you’re travelling by train, Dordrecht station is just a few minutes’ walk from the historic city centre. Direct trains run from Rotterdam and Breda; check the timetables before your trip. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether churches, museums and the walking tour or nature activities will be the focus of your stay.
