A beach stretching for kilometres, a promenade with artworks and museums covering a range of subjects give Scheveningen many different facets. When planning your visit, you can choose between walks by the sea, sculptures and history, and seasonal activities.

Beach, Promenade and Seaside Activities

Scheveningen’s beach, which stretches for kilometres, can be enjoyed all year round. You can walk along the promenade from north to south at any time of year. During the summer months, various operators, including Trip and Vrolijk, run North Sea cruises from the harbour. If you’re looking for an activity on the water, you can also take a surfing lesson on the promenade; providers and dates may vary.

One of the standout attractions on De Pier is a Ferris wheel above the sea. It offers views of the 11-kilometre-long beach and The Hague skyline, and is the first Ferris wheel of its kind in the Netherlands. The zipline offers a different perspective: it starts from a 55-metre-high tower, reaches speeds of up to 70 km/h, and runs over the pier and along the sea and beach. Operating times may vary by season.

Sculptures, Museums and History

The Sprookjesbeelden aan Zee sculpture terrace on the promenade is open to the public free of charge. It features 23 fairy-tale sculptures by artist Tom Otterness. A free tour in the Bloomberg Connects app helps you explore all the sculptures. The experience combines a walk along the promenade with art that you can see right there.

Beelden aan Zee is also dedicated to sculpture, but with a different focus: the museum features modern and contemporary sculpture. It is located in The Hague’s dunes beneath the historic Paviljoen Von Wied and offers views of the sea. Muzee, by contrast, focuses on Scheveningen’s fishing industry and everyday life, past and present. The museum is housed in a historic school building dating from 1877. Together, these museums cover cultural subjects ranging from artistic movements to local working and everyday life.

SEA LIFE Scheveningen is all about marine life from the North Sea, including starfish and sharks. A guided Behind the Scenes Tour is also available. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Scheveningen is located on the promenade. For a different perspective on history, the Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel is a memorial and museum; it has held this status since 2019. Oranjehotel was the nickname given to Scheveningen prison during the Second World War.

Walks and Getting There

If you’re looking for a longer hike with the option to choose how to split it into stages, Wandel door Schevenings Groen is one option: the route is approximately 10 km long and can be completed in full or in three stages. This differs from the walk along the promenade, which is possible year-round from north to south.

From central The Hague, you can reach the promenade on tram lines 1, 9 or 11, or buses 21, 22 and 23. From the Kurhaus stop, it’s a short walk to the promenade; check the routes before your trip. The harbour can be reached by public transport, car and bicycle. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider the promenade and harbour as different arrival points, without confusing seasonal cruises with walks that are possible year-round.
