Delft combines striking churches, Vermeer and Delft Blue with experiences on the water and in nature. This gives you a clear choice of themes when planning your trip: you can focus on architecture and art, or include walks, canals and the Delftse Hout recreation area. Each theme offers a different perspective—from architectural history and art to activities on the water.

Churches and City History

The tower of the Nieuwe Kerk is 108.75 metres high and the second-highest church tower in the Netherlands. Visitors can climb it; weather or operational restrictions may apply. The tomb of William of Orange is also located in the Nieuwe Kerk. The Oude Kerk offers a different focus: it is Delft’s oldest church and is known as “Scheve Jan” because it stands crooked over the canal on which it was built. It is also the burial place of Johannes Vermeer and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. The churches therefore each offer their own points of interest: the Nieuwe Kerk has its tall tower and tomb, while the Oude Kerk is notable for its unusual location and the prominent figures buried there.

Vermeer and Delft Blue

The Vermeer Centrum Delft provides information on four floors about the life and work of Johannes Vermeer and the city of Delft. All 37 known works are on display there as digital reproductions in their original size and chronological order. The Royal Delft Museum offers a different cultural focus: the world-famous Delft Blue pottery has been handcrafted there since 1653, and visitors can walk through the nearly 400-year-old factory. This gives you two different ways to explore the culture: the painter and his work at the Vermeer Centrum, and handcrafted ceramics and their history at Royal Delft.

Walks and Experiences in the Green

The Delftse Hout recreation area offers walks by the lake, boat rentals and a beach. There are also cycling and walking trails. The Arboretum-Heempark is located within this recreation area. At De Papaver, you can go on excursions, take part in exploration and play activities, and join special projects. Programmes may change. The options vary in focus, from waterside walks and trails on foot or by bike to activities centred on exploration and play.

Walks, Cycling and Canals

On foot, you can choose from themed walks about the history of the House of Orange and a Delft Blue ceramics route. A cycling route from Delft to Maasland and Schipluiden passes through Delft and the Midden-Delfland peat meadow area. On the water, visitors can rent SUP boards for tours through the city centre’s canals; beginner courses are also available to book. These are different ways to experience Delft: on foot with a cultural theme, by bike along a route through the peat meadow area, or on the canals. As routes and activities may change, check the latest information on routes, rentals and courses when planning your visit.

If you would like to include a botanical destination alongside churches, art and water, consider the TU Delft Hortus Botanicus: it is a 15-minute walk from the Markt, and the route passes through the historic Oostpoort gate.
