In Capelle aan den IJssel, historic traces meet theatre and a range of ways to enjoy nature and leisure. The former castle site, dance performances and green routes each offer a different focus. You can tailor your trip to what interests you most.
Castle Traces and City History
On the former Sloteiland, the site has been designed to make the outlines of medieval castles and the last Slot van Capelle visible. The former castle landscape is thus brought to life not only through its name but also through its shape. When Slot Capelle was demolished in 1798, only Slotpark with the island, the double moats and the Dief- en Duifhuisje remained. The Dief- en Duifhuisje is Capelle’s small museum. The island, moats and museum offer different points of reference for the history: the visible outlines evoke the castles, while the surviving features mark the turning point of the demolition.
Dance at the Isala Theater
The Isala Theater offers a different cultural focus. Its dance programme ranges from contemporary choreography with circus acrobatics to classical ballet. This range brings different forms of performance together under the umbrella of dance. Individual performances change, so check the dates if the theatre is important to your travel plans.
Nature and Exercise in Schollebos
In the Schollebos nature area, the Natuurpad draws attention to the surroundings: along the route, information signs explain what visitors can see there. Schollebos also has a bicycle motocross track for children. Different activities are therefore available side by side: information about nature along the Natuurpad and a sporting option for children. Natuurparels is a geocaching route in Capelle aan den IJssel, adding another way to engage with the area.
Leisure Activities at Watervallei
Watervallei is open from 10:00 to 20:00 from May to the end of October. Check these seasonal opening times again before travelling. The site includes a playground, ground-level trampolines, a climbing pyramid, a skate park and calisthenics equipment. The skate park and calisthenics facilities add further activities to the play and exercise options.
Picking Areas and Landscape
In designated picking areas in Schollebos, visitors may sample apples, pears and berries and pick some to eat themselves. A visit to the green surroundings can therefore also include a small culinary discovery. Picking rules may be seasonal or updated, so check the current guidelines.
Park Hitland offers another aspect of the landscape: this recreational area, with its rural, open character, lies between Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Capelle aan den IJssel. It adds a landscape with a different character to the range of places and activities mentioned in the town.
Visit Timing and Options
Different timing considerations apply when planning your visit: Watervallei has a specified seasonal opening period, individual theatre performances change, and picking rules may vary by season or be updated. Plan your visit according to the relevant information. Activities range from cultural and historical themes to nature information, geocaching and sport.
