Reeuwijk can be explored through a range of interests: the Reeuwijkse Plassen, paths through the polders and the village’s history. The lakes are accessible year-round. There are also routes for walking, cycling and canoeing, as well as a museum offering insights into rural life and crafts. If you’re looking for a hotel in Reeuwijk, these topics can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Lakes, Polders and Paths

The Reeuwijkse Plassen are a starting point for a range of activities in the area. The Gouwe Wiericke walking route network covers 250 kilometres of walking paths in the polders around the lakes. This describes an extensive network of paths for planning a walk, rather than a single set route. If you prefer to explore by bicycle, there is a separate network: the Reeuwijkse Plassen cycling network follows junctions through the lake area and the Zuidplaspolder. Walking and cycling therefore offer two different ways to explore the polder landscape.

The Elfhoeven nature and recreation area can also be explored on foot or by bicycle. It is accessible via Korssendijk and Groene Ree. The Reeuwijkse Plassen and surrounding area is also a quiet area in the Groene Hart.

On the Water

The Oude Dorpenroute offers a canoe trip through the polders between Reeuwijk and Bodegraven. The full route is 18 kilometres long; shorter sections can be paddled on the Boerderijenroute, at 7 kilometres, or the Landschapsroute, at 11 kilometres. The three stated distances can therefore be compared directly: the Boerderijenroute is the shortest option, the Landschapsroute falls in between, and the Oude Dorpenroute is the longest. A boating permit is required if you take your own boat or sloop onto the Reeuwijkse Plassen. Check the current permit process before setting out.

If you’d rather experience the lakes as part of a guided activity, consider the “Vogels van de Reeuwijkse Plassen” walk, during which a guide accompanies participants through the area. Dates may change; check them before making plans.

Village History at the Streekmuseum

The Streekmuseum Reeuwijk is located between the Reeuwijkse Plassen in an old farmhouse. It presents the history of the village, the countryside and crafts. The collection includes original peat-extraction tools. A scale model illustrates the process from dredging peat to producing fuel, making this working process a particular focus of a museum visit.

The museum is open without an appointment on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Group visits are possible by appointment only. If a museum visit is part of your stay, plan around these opening hours; groups should make an appointment in advance.

Insights into Architectural and Local History

Another cultural point of interest is the H.H. Petrus en Pauluskerk in Reeuwijk. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the church is described as a cruciform church and forms part of a church complex. It adds a religious dimension to the themes of landscape and everyday history.
