Alphen Aan Den Rijn offers several distinct highlights for a trip of discovery: Roman history, mills and nursery culture, as well as trails through the countryside. There are also opportunities to explore the region by water or by bicycle. The places and activities below each offer something different – from reconstructed historical settings to a one-hour circular walk through a polder.
Roman History: Reconstructions and Finds
Museumpark Archeon features reconstructed buildings and houses from prehistoric times in the Netherlands, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. Visitors can also take part in Roman-era activities there, such as military drills, a Roman massage, making a fibula and a herb hunt. The specific program may vary.
The Romeins Museum at Archeon tells the story of the soldiers and local population through numerous Roman finds from Alphen aan den Rijn. Archeon thus combines reconstructed historical settings with an account focused on finds and their history.
The Historisch Museum Hazerswoude displays Roman finds and a replica of a tabula ansata. This wooden tablet served as a writing tablet or nameplate; a nail is still present on the replica. The original was excavated in 2023 at Westvaartpark. Avifauna is also part of the area's history: the world's first bird park opened in Alphen aan den Rijn in 1950.
Mills and Nursery Culture
The De Eendracht grain mill is open to the public on Saturdays and to groups by appointment. The miller explains the milling process; from the gallery, the view stretches over the Oude Rijn and Alphen aan den Rijn. The mill shop offers an extensive range of bread-making products and advice. If your visit depends on a specific date, confirm the visiting arrangements in advance.
The Molenviergang Aarlanderveen is the only functioning chain of mills in the world that still drains a polder. One of the mills can be visited by appointment. This offers a different perspective on mill history than De Eendracht: the focus here is on a working chain of mills used to drain a polder.
The Boomkwekerijmuseum presents the present-day Boskoop nursery sector and its history; volunteers share stories about nursery entrepreneurs. During the summer months, the museum offers excursions in a Boskoop barge. Along the way, a guide explains the nurseries and other notable features along the route. The availability of these trips may vary.
Plantentuin Esveld is a traditional Boskoop nursery with a history dating back to well into the 19th century. Tours and guided visits of the nursery are available; if you are planning a specific visit, check current availability.
Walks Through Polders and the Cultural Landscape
Since September 2025, the public Wandelpad Kroft has been available as a circular walking route. Among other places, the route connects Zegerpark, Westkanaalweg, a farm walking trail across the Kroft family's land and Windepad. The Boerenlandpaden in Alphen, by contrast, are unpaved paths across agricultural land. Access depends on the landowners' consent: walkers must follow the signposted route, and dogs are not allowed. Check the access rules before setting out.
Along the Albaniana walking route, you can encounter traces of a castellum, a vicus, a bathhouse and a sanctuary dedicated to Venus. The Boskoop wandelt route offers a different focus: the nursery area experienced there is considered intangible cultural heritage. The Boerenlandroute – Westvaartroute is a one-hour circular route through the Gemenewegse Polder along the historic Westvaart; it starts and ends in Hazerswoude-Dorp.
Water, Countryside and Cycling Routes
The Oude Rijn flows through the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn. The Roman Limes runs for 17 kilometres through the municipality and is also known here as the Oude Rijn. There are dozens of cycling routes in and around Alphen aan den Rijn. The Hollandse-Limes cycling route connects Alphen aan den Rijn with the excavations at Westvaartpark, Leiden, Hazerswoude, Archeon and Zwammerdam.
Estates, bodies of water, wide-open views and a diverse range of wildlife shape the landscape in and around Alphen aan den Rijn. The Zegersloot underwater nature park lies on the eastern shore of Zegerplas, where visitors can snorkel and dive. At Social Club Wet ’n Wild, you can learn to water-ski and wakeboard on a cable ski lift. A boat trip is possible in Rietveld; at Lena’s Hoeve, you can rent a rowing boat. These activities depend on availability from the respective operators.
Centrally located in Alphen aan den Rijn, the VVV provides visitor information, flyers, route maps, gift cards and souvenirs. If you rely on a particular service, check its availability before your visit.
