Rhoon offers different ways to experience nature and local history: paths cross polder landscapes and nature areas, while the historic centre reveals medieval and village architecture. For planning a stay, specific route details help distinguish short routes from longer walks and bike rides.

Polder Landscape and Nature Paths

Kasteelgaarde Rhoon is a small, varied estate covering 13 hectares, managed by Zuid-Hollands Landschap. It is partially accessible with a pushchair or wheelchair. The paths around the castle and in De Huijters are semi-paved. This limitation is useful to keep in mind: accessibility does not apply across the entire site.

The location of the nature areas also shapes the character of the surroundings. Carnisse Grienden, Rhoonse Grienden and Klein Profijt border the Oude Maas. In the Zegenpolder, the Struinpad runs along a nature-friendly riverbank and offers views across the polder. The Struinroute is about 2.5 kilometres in total. The landscape painting at Driepolderpunt stands where Zegenpolder, Molenpolder and Portlandpolder meet.

Planning Walks and Bike Rides

The Boerenroute is 2.5 to 3 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes. It passes the distinctive growing areas of De Buytenhof and Gert van Herk; along the way, you can learn about the crops grown in the polder landscape. Which plants are relevant at the time may vary by season. For a different kind of nature experience, the “Langs de grienden” walking route starts at Rhoon metro station and runs through the Rhoonse Grienden and Klein Profijt.

The Groene Halte at Rhoon metro station, which opened in 2026, is a useful starting point for longer walks. From there, six walking routes provide direct access to nearby nature and recreation areas. The routes are signposted or included in walking networks and range from 7.5 to 20 kilometres in length. At the Groene Halte, texts and photos about local plants and animals complement the distinctive coloured dots by artist Han Goan Lim.

There is also a specific route option for cycling: the Buijtenroute is a 22.5-kilometre bike ride through Buijtenland van Rhoon. The Vossenpad is part of the 12.5-kilometre Boerenwandeling through this area. If you plan to access Buijtenland van Rhoon via Rhoon metro stop, allow about 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bike to get there.

Local History and Culture Along the Way

Rhoon’s historic centre includes a medieval church, imposing houses and Kasteel van Rhoon. The façade stone from the former De Meijlle school offers another insight into the village’s history. It stands at the intersection of Kleidijk and Molendijk, near the site where the school stood for many years, keeping alive the memory of the school and its importance to the village.

The “Blik op Albrandswaard” historic walking and cycling route starts in Rhoon and leads to places of cultural-historical or art-historical interest. At each stop, QR codes provide access to photos, text, drawings, and audio or video information. This sets the route apart from those focused on distance or polder landscapes: here, the stories and artistic perspectives at each stop take centre stage.

Rhoon as a Starting Point for Your Plans

When planning a stay in Rhoon, you can first decide whether you want to spend your days mostly on nature paths, longer walks, cycling or exploring local history. Rhoon metro station is a useful point of reference: “Langs de grienden” starts there, and the six walking routes start at the Groene Halte. The stated route distances and walking or cycling times help you choose activities based on how long they take, without combining different routes into a single tour.
