Genemuiden reveals itself through its landscapes along the Zwarte Water, the city’s history and the textile heritage of mat weaving. You can encounter these themes in different ways: in exhibitions, on a city walk and on possible trips across the water. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests in culture, history or landscapes.
Landscapes around Genemuiden
Genemuiden borders the Nationaal Landschap IJsseldelta. The surrounding area comprises several distinct landscapes: to the north lies the river landscape of the Zwarte Water, on the eastern and southwestern sides the distinctive polder landscape of Mastenbroek, and to the west the polders outside the dikes along the former Zuiderzee. If you are interested in landscapes, you will encounter more than just one type here. The different areas give the surroundings of Genemuiden a clear geographical structure.
The water offers another way to explore the region. Trips with De Vijf Gebroeders can take you along the Zwarte Water and show you a landscape of floating reed beds, reeds, characteristic flora and fauna, lakes and kolken. From the water, the focus is on the natural and aquatic landscape. The visitors’ harbour in the centre of Genemuiden is a separate attraction in its own right.
Mat Weaving and City History
The textile heritage is also reflected in a local singing tradition. Singing with a high part is closely connected with mat weaving in Genemuiden. When cutting rushes along the banks of the Zwarte Water north of Genemuiden, the rush cutters sang psalms with a high part. The connection between work, craftsmanship and singing gives the history of mat weaving a distinctive cultural dimension.
At the Historisch Centrum Genemuiden, a permanent exhibition explores the city’s history. There is also a period room from the early 20th century, an original pre-war shop and a carpenter’s workshop. The exhibition on the city’s history and the individual historic rooms offer different perspectives: a broad overview sits alongside specific insights into everyday life and work in the past. At the Historisch Centrum, you can also discover your own family history and family tree.
Historic Machines and Hands-on Activities
At the Tapijtmuseum Genemuiden, historic machines in the Machinehal are regularly put into operation. The “Kijkje in de Fabriek” exhibition complements this look at textile production with hands-on activities: visitors can operate a robot arm themselves and place yarn spools in position. The museum thus offers different kinds of insight: the Machinehal shows historic machines in operation, while the exhibition also lets visitors operate equipment themselves.
Explore on Foot or with the App
The Stadswandeling Genemuiden takes a little over an hour and leads through the old town centre. It introduces you to both the history of the town and the development of today’s carpet industry. Along the way, the walk passes through Springerpark, by a war memorial and the site of the former Blokhuis, which existed for only a short time. The walk brings together the city’s history and specific stops along the route.
The free Ons-Erfgoed app offers another option. It lets you follow self-planned walking and cycling routes past selected sites in Zwartewaterland, including Genemuiden. You can adjust the distance; along the way, the app offers stories, images and audio clips about local history, heritage and nature. Unlike the Stadswandeling, which has a stated duration and described route, the app lets you plan the route and distance yourself.
For planning purposes, the Stadswandeling is a specific option for a walk of a little over an hour, while the app offers a choice of different self-planned routes. If you would rather focus on the waterscape, trips with De Vijf Gebroeders can take you along the Zwarte Water. Which option you choose depends on whether you are more interested in the city’s history, its textile heritage or the landscape.
