Kallenkote lies on the border between Overijssel and Drenthe, and also on the boundary between the sandy and peat landscapes. The characteristic ribbon village follows the course of the Steenwijker Aa. Around 1200, the place was first marked on a map under the name “Collencoten.” Its geographical location and settlement form offer two different perspectives; the early name on the map adds a historical point of reference.
Remembrance and the History of Farm Architecture
The “Herdenkingsmonument 1944” commemorates six residents who actively or passively resisted the occupying forces and were shot by them without trial on 13 October 1944. It consists of a large erratic boulder with a memorial plaque; smaller stones form a semicircle around it. The monument thus combines a distinctive form with remembrance of an event that took place on a specific date.
Kallenkote 25 offers a different historical perspective: it is a farm complex dating from the second half of the 19th century in the northwest of Overijssel. The complex comprises a farmhouse with a cross barn, two sheds and a farmyard partly paved with erratic boulders and bricks. The combination of erratic boulders and bricks is a distinct architectural feature of the complex, complementing its buildings. While the monument commemorates an event, the farm complex represents the architectural composition of a 19th-century farm.
Group Activities and Small Celebrations
For outings, you can hire the horse tram from Maargies Hoeve. It accommodates up to 20 people and can be used with or without a driver, as you prefer. This gives groups a clear maximum capacity and a choice of how to use it.
Cooking workshops for groups of 8 to a maximum of 15 people can be booked at Maargies Kooklokaal. They last around four hours and cost €65 per person. The price includes three drinks and, at the end, a cup of coffee or tea. The maximum group size is therefore smaller than the capacity of the horse tram; the workshop duration and price are also specified. Availability and group limits reflect the operator’s current information and may change. Check these details before making a reservation.
The Maargies Verrassingsmenu is offered at Maargies Kooklokaal on Wednesdays and Fridays. Where possible, it features meat from their own animals, fresh vegetables from the garden and Maargies Zuivel. Check the operator’s current schedule before making plans.
Kallenkerkje is an official wedding venue for small, intimate ceremonies, with room for around 30 guests. This approximate capacity is a guide for planning your guest list. Confirm current availability for a specific celebration.
