Cycling routes, walks and architectural history offer different ways to experience IJsselmuiden. Choose a theme: a cycling route along the mouth of the IJssel, trails exploring maritime and transport heritage, or churches dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The harbour is also relevant when planning your trip, especially if you are travelling by boat.
Cycling routes with different starting points
The “Rondje Kampereiland en Mandjeswaard” cycling route starts at the beginning of Frieseweg in IJsselmuiden and runs along the mouth of the IJssel. From Zwolle, you can reach the route by train via the Kamperlijntje rail connection.
The “Pontjesroute IJsseldelta: Kampen”, by contrast, starts in the centre of IJsselmuiden at junction 45. It follows a figure-eight layout: the northern loop is 24 kilometres long and the southern loop 28 kilometres; they meet at junction 45. The northern loop is therefore four kilometres shorter. The route is part of a series of four Pontjesroutes in the IJsseldelta.
The Rondje starts at the beginning of Frieseweg and follows the mouth of the IJssel, while the Pontjesroute offers different points of reference, starting in the centre and comprising two loops. So when planning a bike ride, you can first compare the starting points you prefer and then the route lengths.
Walking trails with historical connections
The “Mobiel en Maritiem Erfgoed Kampen” walking route starts at the city bridge and leads in three directions to places in Kampen and IJsselmuiden. It illustrates maritime and transport heritage through ships, cars and trains, as well as the transport of people and goods over the centuries. The route thus connects modes of transport with a longer history of transportation.
The “Scherenwellepad” walking trail follows a different historical thread. It runs along the edge of IJsselmuiden, following the former tow canal connection between Kampen and Zwolle. While one route explores modes of transport and transportation over the centuries, the Scherenwellepad’s historical connection is the former canal route.
Churches and architectural history
The Dorpskerk IJsselmuiden, also known as St. Crispin’s Church, is the oldest building in IJsselmuiden. Two other construction dates provide a point of reference for the architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the R.K. Kapel was built in 1889 to a design by Amsterdam architect A.C. Boersma; the R.K. Kerk IJsselmuiden was built in 1919 to a design by J. Stuyt. There are 30 years between the two construction dates.
The Verhofstadt organ is also part of IJsselmuiden’s history; its story begins in 1885. This is four years before the chapel was built and 34 years before the R.K. Kerk was built. These dates help place different moments in local architectural and musical history in context, without conflating the individual buildings.
WSV IJsselmuiden harbour
WSV IJsselmuiden harbour has around 80 berths, some of which are available to visiting boaters. Toilets, showers, electricity and Wi-Fi are available throughout the harbour. If you are considering the harbour when planning your trip, berth availability and facilities are two practical points to check separately. As both can change, it is worth checking the WSV’s latest information before making plans.
