The historic centre of Diepenheim along Grotestraat has protected townscape status. There are also art in gardens, walking routes with different historical themes, and a landscape whose patterns from around 1930 are still largely recognisable. Together, culture, townscape and nature offer different perspectives on Diepenheim.

Townscape and architectural history

The appearance of the Watermolen Den Haller is protected too: since 1991, it has had state-protected village status. The Den Haller grain watermill lies on the road from Diepenheim to Hengevelde and dates from 1169. Huis te Diepenheim is another historic landmark. Berent Bentinck had it built in 1648; it is located on the outskirts of Diepenheim.

The dates and protection designations highlight different aspects: for Den Haller, both its protected appearance and the mill’s long history are noted. For Huis te Diepenheim, the specific points of reference are its builder, year of construction and location on the outskirts. Those interested in architectural history can consider these details as distinct aspects of local history.

Art and collections

Drawing Centre Diepenheim is an internationally oriented Dutch art platform dedicated to drawing. Its gardens form a special outdoor collection in which various artists present their perspectives on gardens, nature and landscape. This art focus thus connects drawing with themes that also recur in the landscape around Diepenheim.

Drawing Centre’s programme includes exhibitions, public programmes, artist residencies, masterclasses and an educational programme. The gardens and the programme offer two different insights into the centre’s work. The Oranjemuseum in Diepenheim offers another cultural perspective: it has a collection of more than 2,000 orange-coloured objects. While Drawing Centre focuses on drawing and artistic perspectives on landscape, the collection of orange-coloured objects defines the Oranjemuseum’s theme.

Walking routes with different themes

The Diepenheim walking route passes the Rietmanzuiltjes and tells the story of Diepenheim’s rich history. The Kastelenroute Diepenheim is also a walking route, but it passes three castles: Kasteel Warmelo, Huize Diepenheim and Kasteel Nijenhuis. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their stated focus: one explores the history of Diepenheim, while the other passes three named castles.

A free route map for the Wandelroute Diepenheim is available, among other places, at Cultuurcentrum Herberg de Pol. Ask locally whether the map is available. On the Huis te Diepenheim estate, one section of woodland is called Sterrebos. Check for possible access restrictions before visiting.

Landscape and the Regge

Around Diepenheim, the landscape pattern from around 1930 is still largely recognisable. This includes a kamp landscape and winding roads. This historical imprint describes not only individual buildings but also a pattern in the surrounding area that remains recognisable today.

The Regge begins at the Westerflier estate in Diepenheim as a branch of the Schipbeek. Its natural, meandering course has been restored in the landscape in recent years. On Landgoed Nijenhuis, the historic ice cellar is now home to a bat colony. These named landscape features bring together a river course, historical use and a present-day habitat.

Market and open-air theatre

Heerlijcke Markt Diepenheim takes place on the first Sunday of every month. It offers unique, creative designs as well as tastings of artisan products. Check the current programme before your visit if you would like to include the market in your travel plans.

Heimland is a theatre festival at which Diepenheim serves as a stage for open-air performances—from site-specific theatre and circus to music and dance. The event adds performing arts to the cultural and landscape themes described above. Check the details of the current festival edition before your visit.
