Daarle is an old Esch village where landscape and cultural history offer different points of interest. For planning a trip, two themes can be considered side by side: the surroundings, with their meadows, forests, and bodies of water, and historical traces in the village.

Eschland and the Daarlesche Flier

The surroundings include a hilly Esch, forests, small lakes, the Overijssels Canal, and extensive pastures. Meadows, forests, and bodies of water make the area varied. The Daarlesche Flier forms a distinct landscape: it is low-lying and marshy, with occasional higher sandy ridges. The high Esch of the old village and the low-lying Flier differ markedly in form; together, they show that Daarle’s landscape is not limited to a single type.

Routes with different points of interest

When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing between two different details. The approximately 80-kilometre Hellendoorn car route passes through the fields of Daarle. The 83.4-kilometre Gedichten Fietsroute is associated with Daarle and is one of the walking and cycling routes. It connects the village centres and hamlets of the municipality of Hellendoorn; the poems along the route were written by 15 local poets. The two routes are similar in length but have different points of interest: fields on the car route, and poems and village centres on the Gedichten Fietsroute. If a particular route is essential to your trip, check the latest route information before setting off; details may change.

Monuments and local remembrance

Daarle’s cultural traces also take different forms. The water tower at Watertorenweg 17 is on the municipality of Hellendoorn’s list of protected monuments. The Daarle baptismal font is Romanesque, made of Bentheim sandstone, and dates from around 1200; until 1927, it was located at Erve Janshuis in Daarle. The Waterstaatkerk on Groeneweg was completed in 1854 and replaced by the present-day church in 1955. The baptismal font points to a much earlier period than the Waterstaatkerk; the church’s later alteration is marked by its replacement in 1955.

A small chapel in Daarle commemorates Albert Ensing. His niece designed the stained-glass memorial window. There is also a monument to Albert Ensing in the cemetery. The chapel with its memorial window and the cemetery monument represent different forms of remembrance; anyone interested in local cultural history can look beyond construction dates to these personal memorials, too.

Village festivals and cultural events

Alongside its buildings and places of remembrance, Daarle has sociable village festivals and cultural events for all ages. They add a community-focused dimension to the village’s history. A culturally focused trip can therefore take in different themes: architectural history and remembrance on the one hand, and village festivals and events on the other. If a particular festival is the reason for your visit, check its date before planning.
