When cycling and hiking, the landscape ranges from Dalfsen’s river dunes through esch landscapes and woodland to estate landscapes. So when planning, the first thing to consider is what kind of route and distance suit your stay: a village walk to historic places offers a different focus from marked paths on a country estate or a longer cycling route. The town centre also offers its own way to discover Dalfsen, with small streets, listed buildings, shops and historic structures.

Choose cycling routes by starting point and distance

The Landgoederenroute starts at Dalfsen NS railway station and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. You can choose between 8.5 and 15 km. More than 80 percent of the route runs along unpaved paths and sandy roads. The distance and surface are two specific points to consider when planning this tour.

Another option is the approximately 25 km Dalfsen cycling route via the De Stokte–Hessum ferry. It starts and ends at the Westermolen. Check the ferry service and route details before setting off. The first stage of the Vechtdalroute runs from Zwolle via Dalfsen to Vilsteren and is approximately 37 km long. These details represent different route distances: for the Vechtdalroute, the stage and its length are described here, while the cycling route via De Stokte–Hessum also specifies the starting and ending point and the ferry.

On foot: local history, estate paths and views

The Dorpswandeling Oud Dalfsen leads to historically significant places in Old Dalfsen. It is 2 or 3.4 km long and starts and ends at the Westermolen. The two distances offer a choice between a shorter and a slightly longer loop, without implying a specific walking time.

At Landgoed De Horte, there are two marked walking routes: a yellow route of 3.5 km and a red one of 5.5 km. Both lead to, among other places, a viewing point. The estate was laid out predominantly in the French style at the beginning of the 17th century. De Horte and its surroundings are home to otters, barn owls, badgers, stoats and kingfishers; sightings of these species are not guaranteed.

Another destination is the 20 m-high Uitkijktoren De Stokte. From there, you can see across forests and the Vecht, with far-reaching views. The tower is a junction on the Vechtdalpad walking route. This route provides a walking connection of less than 5 km from Dalfsen station to the Uitkijktoren. For further walking stages, Kunstwegen offers routes between NS railway stations along the sequence Zwolle–Dalfsen–Ommen–Marienberg–Hardenberg–Gramsbergen. The walking stages are marked in white and blue.

Historic places in the centre

The Grote Kerk Dalfsen was built in 1178 in the Gothic style, on higher ground and oriented east to west. It is still used by the Protestant congregation in Dalfsen. Listed buildings and small streets shape the townscape in the centre. There, you can stroll, shop and admire historic buildings.

If you would like to compare different options, you can look at the route distances and starting points side by side: from 2 or 3.4 km for the Dorpswandeling to approximately 25 km for the cycling route via De Stokte–Hessum and approximately 37 km for the first stage of the Vechtdalroute. This makes it possible to plan your stay around the routes and historic places that interest you most.
