Bentveld combines cycling routes through the village with nearby areas where open dune landscapes meet historic traces. Two cycling routes pass through Bentveld.

Dune Landscapes and Paths

Nearby is Rozenwaterveld, an open dune valley within the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen Natura 2000 area. At the end of the 18th century, the area was part of the Groot Bentveld estate. Rozenwaterveld can therefore be understood both in terms of its landscape and its historical association.

The Green Route passes through a largely open dune landscape towards Renbaanveld and past Tonneblink, one of the area’s highest dune peaks. The 6.7 km Green Route Zandvoortselaan begins in a wooded section with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. The route descriptions highlight different landscapes: open dunes on one route and woodland at the start of the other.

Cycling Routes in Different Directions

The two routes are easy to distinguish for cyclists. The Rondom het Kraansvlak cycling route passes through Bentveld into the dunes and continues towards the forests of Koningshof and Elswout. Its return leg runs via the Duinpieperpad through the dunes to Zandvoort. The Natuurlijk Zandvoort cycling route passes through Bentveld and Heemstede on its way to Haarlem; its return leg runs via the Visserspad and the Duinpieperpad.

The Duinpieperpad features on both return legs. The other sections mentioned follow different directions: Rondom het Kraansvlak heads towards the forests of Koningshof and Elswout, while Natuurlijk Zandvoort continues via Heemstede to Haarlem. This comparison helps distinguish the routes by their described paths and destinations.

Traces of Different Eras

Nearby, Tonneblink, a bunker from the Second World War, now provides shelter for bats. The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen contain around 400 bunkers built by Germany during the Second World War as part of the Atlantic Wall. Tonneblink thus brings together a specific structure from wartime history and its present-day function as a bat roost.

Other historical connections also shape the surrounding area. A horse-racing course stood at Renbaanveld from 1844 to 1855. Groot Bentveld began its history around 1596 as a dune farmstead and is an 18th-century country estate with parkland on the edge of the dunes. At the end of the 18th century, Rozenwaterveld was part of the Groot Bentveld estate. These dates mark distinct periods: the beginnings of Groot Bentveld around 1596, the racecourse years from 1844 to 1855, and the bunkers of the Second World War.

Equestrian Sports and Finding a Hotel

Stal De Naaldenhof B.V. is an FNRS-affiliated riding establishment in Bentveld, adding an equestrian connection to the cycling, nature and history themes. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether cycling routes, dune landscapes, history or equestrian sports matter most to you. These different themes give you a concrete basis for choosing Bentveld as a destination to suit your interests.
