In Monnickendam, local history, church architecture and maritime traditions come together in a range of places to explore. The town was first mentioned in 1288 and received its town charter in 1356. Part of the town has been a protected townscape since 1970. If you’d like to focus your stay on culture, you’ll find historic buildings, museums and insights into the region’s past here.

Church, tower and protected townscape

The Grote Kerk, also known as Sint-Nicolaaskerk, stands in the Waterland polder landscape. It was built on the edge of the historic centre. Its three aisles each have a wooden barrel vault, and there are 38 rosettes in total. The church offers a distinctive glimpse of the town’s architecture. Waterlandsmuseum de Speeltoren adds to this picture: the 400 m² museum was built around the medieval Speeltoren, dating from 1450, in 2012.

The museum is about more than individual buildings. It explores the 2,000-year development of the Waterland landscape and its distinctive yet vulnerable character as a peat meadow area. Visitors can also play the carillon themselves. For children, the Juniorzaal offers games, dress-up opportunities and a museum treasure hunt. These activities let you focus a museum visit in different ways, without having to plan the entire programme at once.

Trade, collections and local keepsakes

For centuries, De Waegh was the economic centre of Monnickendam. Butter, cheese, fish, meat and grain were weighed and traded here. The original scales from its days as a weigh house can still be seen. A small architectural detail can be found at Noordeinde 10: three façade stones bear the inscriptions “Dit is Uitendam (Uitdam)” and “Anno 1660”.

The DDR Museum in Monnickendam sheds light on another chapter of history. Across 13 display cases, it presents a wide range of objects relating to life, work and politics in the GDR from 1949 to 1990. The collection includes consumer goods, official documents, medals, brochures, photographs and personal mementos. Comparing the museum with the town’s historic sites brings different themes together without reducing them to a single story.

Harbour and fish-related traditions

Monnickendam’s harbour could accommodate large seagoing ships, allowing merchants to trade with the Baltic region. Maritime themes continue to shape local traditions today. The tradition of eel smoking lives on during the Monnickendam Fish Days. Eel was traditionally smoked in smokehouses on the quayside over a mixture of oak and beech wood. At the annual Jan Haring Race, smokers compete for the title of best fish smoker. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates for your travel dates.

The historic sailing ships of Zeilvloot Monnickendam are based in the inner harbour of Monnickendam, in the municipality of Waterland. The channel to Monnickendam is about 2.5 metres deep; following it all the way takes you into the old harbour basin. Check the channel conditions before sailing. This navigational information adds a practical note for travellers on the water to the town’s history.

Plan a walking tour and activities

The “Discover Monnickendam” audio tour is a 30-minute walking tour that starts and ends at the Grote Kerk. The free-to-download app automatically plays an audio story at each stop. This makes it easy to combine a short walking tour with a visit to the church. Bus 315 from Amsterdam is listed as a travel option for the tour; check the timetable before setting off. In Monnickendam, you can also go cycling or rent an electric whisper boat. Whisper boat availability may vary.

When choosing a hotel in Monnickendam, it helps to decide first what you’d like to focus on during your stay: architectural history and museums, the maritime past, or an occasion such as the Fish Days. If you’re planning to attend a seasonal event, check the relevant dates.
