For a trip to Ijmuiden, you can choose between different points of focus: bunker and fortress history, outdoor trails, or the beach and sea lock. The destinations also differ in how you can visit them: alongside walks with specific route details, there are guided tours and beach activities. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural sites, walking trails or maritime infrastructure.

Bunkers, Fort and UNESCO Heritage

The Bunker Museum IJmuiden consists of six furnished bunkers. Volunteers answer questions and provide detailed information there. A two-hour bunker excursion, led by an experienced guide, takes you through the dune area along the Batterij Heerenduin and the Olmen anti-aircraft gun emplacement. The two formats are clearly distinct: the museum focuses on the six bunkers and information from the volunteers, while the excursion links two named defensive sites along a guided route.

Forteiland IJmuiden is the largest fort in the Stelling van Amsterdam and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its extensive system of corridors includes more than forty rooms. The fort can be reached by boat from IJmuiden. It offers a different focus from the Bunker Museum: its place in the Stelling van Amsterdam and the scale of its corridor system shape the impression of the fortress.

Walking Trails with Different Points of Focus

The distances of two walks can be compared directly. The Heerenduinen circular walk is 4.5 kilometres long, takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and starts at the Heerenduinen entrance. The Oud-IJmuiden Heritage Trail is longer, at 5.5 kilometres, and passes historically and culturally significant places in Oud-IJmuiden. Conditions on the Heerenduinen circular walk may change; check them before setting off.

“Rondje IJmuiden” is intended for walkers and cyclists. The route passes through the municipality of Velsen and takes in notable Atlantic Wall sites in and around the port and in the dunes. “IJmuiden van Dudok,” by contrast, is a walking route through the centre of IJmuiden. This offers two distinct options: a route through several parts of the municipality and one that runs specifically through the town centre.

Dune Landscape and Beach

Heerenduinen, part of Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland, lies near Ijmuiden. High dunes and old oak woods shape the landscape. You may spot deer, foxes, Konik horses and Scottish Highland cattle. These are possible sightings, not fixed stops along a route.

The expansive beach at IJmuiden offers a different way to spend time outdoors: activities include land sailing with buggies, sunbathing and walking. Beach activities therefore differ from the walking trails, for which specific distances are given.

Sea Lock and Maritime Structures

The Zeesluis IJmuiden is 500 metres long, 70 metres wide and 18 metres deep; it is described as the largest sea lock in the world. A guided visit starts at the IJmuider Zee- en Havenmuseum and then continues to the lock complex. The guided tour through the Zeesluis covers about 4 kilometres. Cars may drive as far as the Middensluis, while bicycles are permitted throughout the lock complex. When planning your visit, both the approximate distance covered on the tour and the different access restrictions are relevant.

The IJmuiden lighthouses are round, reddish-brown cast-iron towers designed by Quirinus Harder. The tower is not open to the public. It is therefore part of the town’s maritime history as a structure, not as an interior visit.
